Area roundup: Ali Forde guides Vandals to Big Sky win

Ali Forde had 17 kills and 10 digs and Meredith Coba dished out 51 assists as Idaho (5-8, 1-0) recovered after a first-set loss and beat Northern Colorado (7-6, 0-1) in a Big Sky Conference opener Thursday in Greeley, Colorado.

Scores were 19-25, 31-29, 25-23, 25-19.

Idaho’s Alyssa Schultz added 12 kills and six blocks and Jessica Hastriter chipped in 14 kills.

Northern Colorado was led by Kendra Cunningham’s 15 kills and 12 digs.

The Vandals play at North Dakota on Saturday.

• Alexa Gray and Jennifer Hamson combined for 21 kills and No. 11 BYU (10-2, 1-0) made quick work of Gonzaga, beat the Bulldogs in straight sets in a West Coast Conference opener in Provo, Utah. Scores were 25-22, 25-17, 25-13.

The Bulldogs (9-3, 0-1) had won eight of nine before the loss.

Jordan Gasser had 12 kills for Gonzaga, which plays at WCC foe San Diego on Saturday.

• Lexi Robinson had 13 kills and 12 digs and North Dakota (13-5, 1-0) recovered after dropping the first set and beat Eastern Washington (4-10, 0-1) in a Big Sky Conference opener in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Scores were 27-29, 25-23, 25-21, 25-19.

The loss was the Eagles’ eighth straight after a 4-2 start to the season.

Eastern Washington’s Talia Fermantez led all players with 15 kills.

Women’s soccer

Kira Wagoner’s double-overtime goal gave Oregon (5-3-1, 1-0) a 1-0 win over Washington (6-3, 0-1) in a Pac-12 Conference opener in Eugene.

Miranda Schulz assisted on the game-winner, which came in the 104th minute.
