Area roundup: Taylor Jones’ home run rallies Zags past Cougs

Taylor Jones’ first home run of the season – a two-run shot – was the big blow in a three-run sixth inning as the Gonzaga Bulldogs rallied for a 5-4 nonconference victory over the visiting Washington State Cougars on Tuesday.

Jones’ homer off Cougars reliever Scotty Sunitsch gave the Bulldogs a 4-3 lead. Jeff Bohling’s RBI single increased the lead to 5-3 later in the inning.

WSU (12-15) rallied in the top of the ninth when Ian Sagdal, who had four hits on the day, singled home Daniel Fredrickson to pull the Cougs within a run and put runners at the corners with two outs. But Gonzaga reliever David Bigelow retired Wes Leow for the final out to earn his fifth save of the season.

Gonzaga (13-15) jumped out to a 2-0 first-inning lead off WSU starter Nick Leonard – taking advantage of three walks, an error and Mitch Gunsolus’ two-run double.

WSU knotted the score at 2 in the fourth on Wes Hatten’s run-scoring single and an RBI groundout by J.J. Hancock. Sagdal’s solo home run – his first of the season – gave the Cougs a 3-2 lead in the fifth.
