Spokane police arrest man wanted for questioning in fatal Hillyard shooting

Staff reports
Spokane police arrested Cameron Keith, a person of interest in the shooting death of Christen DeMars, early Thursday morning. Jail records show Keith was booked at 2:40 a.m. on an outstanding Department of Corrections warrant. Police said detectives received a tip around midnight that Keith was heading to a motel on North Division Street and were able to arrest him without incident. DeMars, 22, died March 24 after being shot in the abdomen at a Hillyard apartment. Police have been searching for Keith since the shooting, and Crime Stoppers of the Inland Northwest announced a reward Wednesday afternoon for information leading to Keith’s capture. According to court documents, DeMars’ mother told police Keith was her daughter’s boyfriend. She said Keith was abusive and DeMars had been trying to leave him. Keith has multiple prior convictions for violating no contact orders. The medical examiner has held off on ruling DeMars’ death a homicide, pending police investigation. Police spokeswoman Monique Cotton said yesterday that detectives needed to question Keith before a ruling could be made. Police said Keith is being held on his warrant, but additional charges related to DeMars death are anticipated in the coming days.
