Area roundup: Andrew Sopko leads Gonzaga over Gaels

Andrew Sopko was masterful through eight innings Friday, and Gonzaga opened a three-game West Coast Conference set with Saint Mary’s with a 7-0 win at Patterson Complex in Spokane.

Sopko allowed two hits, a walk and struck out eight to improve to 5-3.

Taylor Jones and Tyler Frost drove in two runs apiece to guide GU offensively.

The Bulldogs (16-17, 6-7) and Gaels (19-14, 6-7) play again today at 6 p.m.

• Joe Pistorese threw his fourth complete game of the season in leading Washington State to an 8-3 Pac-12 Conference win over Washington at Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman.

Pistorese allowed three runs on six hits and struck out eight to improve to 5-3 on the season.

Shane Matheny had two hits, three runs and an RBI to lead the Cougars offensively.

The win was Washington State’s fifth in its past six games. The Cougars improved to 17-16 overall and 5-9 in the Pac-12. The Huskies are 18-14 and 5-9.

Softball

Lindsie Scholwinski led Community Colleges of Spokane to a Northwest Athletic Conference sweep of Columbia Basin at Spokane Falls Community College.

Scholwinski pitched all seven innings in both games. She gave up just one hit in the Sasquatch’s 4-0 win in the opener and a run on four hits in CCS’ 4-1 win in the nightcap.

The Sasquatch improved to 22-2 overall and 14-1 in the NWAC. Columbia Basin is 12-10 and 4-4. The Sasquatch play Walla Walla today at noon at SFCC.

• No. 16 Arizona scored 10 runs in the first inning and eased past No. 18 Washington 14-6 in the opener of a three-game Pac-12 Conference series in Tucson, Arizona.

Chelsea Suitos had three hits and four RBIs and Katiyana Mauga added three RBIs for the Wildcats (32-9, 7-3).

Washington (34-10, 6-6) starter Kasey Stanchek was tagged for six runs. She got just one out.
