In brief: U.S. protests Russian jet’s maneuvers

From Wire Reports

WASHINGTON – The U.S. is protesting an intercept of a U.S. reconnaissance plane by a Russian fighter jet last week, calling it “unsafe and unprofessional” amid what it views as increasingly aggressive air operations by Moscow.

Pentagon spokesman Mark Wright on Sunday said the U.S. was filing a complaint to Russia “through diplomatic channels” after the April 7 incident over the Baltic Sea.

Russian officials have denied their pilot did anything wrong, according to several news reports.

According to the Pentagon, the U.S. RC-135U plane was flying in international airspace north of Poland. U.S. officials say a Russian SU-27 fighter intercepted the U.S. aircraft at a high rate of speed from the rear, and then proceeded to conduct two more passes using “unsafe and unprofessional maneuvers” in close proximity.

“Unprofessional air intercepts have the potential to cause harm to all aircrews involved. More importantly, the careless actions of a single pilot have the potential to escalate tensions between countries,” Wright said.

Two shot to death after accident kills child

MILWAUKEE – Milwaukee police say the driver of a car who struck and killed a 2-year-old was shot to death at the scene of the accident. A teen who was not in the vehicle also was shot and died at a hospital.

Police Capt. Timothy Heier said the accident occurred at 5:10 p.m. Sunday after the child ran into the street. Heier said in a statement that the driver, a 41-year-old man, remained at the scene. Then he and a 15-year-old boy were shot. Heier said the teen was not a passenger.

Heier said the 2-year-old and man were pronounced dead at the scene. He said the teen was taken to a hospital, where he died during surgery.

Police said no suspects were in custody. No further details were immediately available.

Boy, 3, shoots, kills 1-year-old

CLEVELAND – A 3-year-old boy picked up an unattended gun inside a home and it went off, shooting a 1-year-old boy in the head and killing him Sunday afternoon, police said.

Cleveland police Chief Calvin Williams said investigators are trying to determine where the gun came from.

Emergency workers said the 1-year-old was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead.

Full details about the shooting on the city’s east side weren’t released, but Williams said at least one adult was home when it happened.

Car crash kills one at Disney attraction

ORLANDO, Fla. – A Lamborghini that was part of an exotic car racing attraction at Walt Disney World crashed into a guardrail, killing a passenger and injuring the driver Sunday, police said.

The attraction lets racecar fans be drivers or passengers in luxurious cars such as Lamborghinis, Porsches or Ferraris.

It wasn’t immediately clear if the driver was a track employee or a customer. The driver was hospitalized with minor injuries. The passenger was a 36-year-old man from nearby Davenport.

Their names were not immediately released.

The Lamborghini crashed when the driver lost control on the course at the Exotic Driving Experience, according to the Florida Highway Patrol, which was investigating.

A Disney spokeswoman declined comment.

Students suspended in alleged sex assault

PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. – Two Alabama college students have been suspended after authorities discovered a cellphone video that allegedly shows them sexually assaulting a woman at a Florida beach while a large crowd of spring-break revelers watches.

Bay County Sheriff Frank McKeithen described the video as “very, very graphic” and called it the “most disgusting, sickening thing” he had ever seen. He said the footage shows several men surrounding an incapacitated woman on a beach chair.

The victim told authorities that she thought she had been drugged at the time, and she did not remember the incident well enough to report it.

Both students attended Troy University.

Delonte Martistee, a 22-year-old senior from Bainbridge, Georgia, and Ryan Calhoun, a 23-year-old sophomore from Mobile, Alabama, were arrested Thursday in Alabama on Florida warrants. Martistee remained in jail Sunday in Panama City. Calhoun was released on bond.

The sheriff’s office said additional arrests are expected.
