Cameron Frost helps lead WSU to 11-1 nonconference baseball win over New Mexico State

Sophomore outfielder Cameron Frost had a three-run home run to highlight a five-run fourth inning that propelled Washington State to an 11-1 nonconference baseball win over New Mexico State on Monday night at Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman.

Frost, who was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and four RBIs, received offensive support from Derek Chapman, who was 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI and Jack Strunk, who was 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI. It was Frost’s second home run.

That was more than enough support for a half-dozen WSU (19-17) pitchers who blanked the Aggies (4-29-1) on one hit after Quinnton Mack greeted Cougars starter Scotty Sunitsch with Mack’s third home run leading off the first-inning. Sunitsch pitched 3 2/3 innings, allowing five hits and a walk while striking out four.

College golf

The Gonzaga women are second and the men eighth after the first day of the West Coast Conference Championships in Somis, California.

Senior Han Wu shot a 5-over-par 77, good for a share of third, and defending champion Alice Kim is a stroke further back at 78 as they led the Bulldogs to a 317, six strokes back of Pepperdine.

Sean Walsh carded a four-over 76, which puts the junior into a tie for 11th, as he led the Zags to a 314. San Francisco has the first-day lead with a 303.

Hockey

Liam Stewart is getting a start to a pro career. The Quad City Mallards, the Minnesota Wild affiliate in the East Coast Hockey League, announced Monday they have signed Stewart, who wrapped up his 20-year-old season with the Spokane Chiefs last week.

A 6-foot-1, 180-pound center from Hermosa Beach, California, Stewart had career highs with 25 goals and 28 assists during the 2014-15 Western Hockey League season.
