Area roundup: 2 Pirates finish in top 5 at NWC Multi-Event

Whitworth freshman Kayla Brase placed third in the heptathlon, while senior Jon Williams finished fourth in the decathlon at the Northwest Conference Multi-Event Championships on Tuesday in Tacoma.

Brase finished in the top 5 in four of seven events and piled up 3,936 points. Charity Arn of George Fox won with 4,333 points.

Williams won the 1,500-meter run and the discus and finished in the top 5 in seven of 10 events. He totaled 5,987 points. Cameron Braithewaite of Puget Sound won with 6,255.

Women’s golf

Senior Kristen Rue shot a final-round 2-under-par 70 to finish at 11-over 227 and help guide the Washington State Cougars to a ninth-place showing at the Silverado Showdown in Napa, California.

WSU freshman Alivia Brown (228) tied for 29th place, one stroke behind Rue, who tied for 26th.

Softball

The game between Community Colleges of Spokane and host North Idaho College was postponed and will be made up on today at 2 p.m.

Awards

The Idaho Vandals picked up a pair of awards in Big Sky tennis play.

Sophomore Galina Bykova was the women’s player of the week, while senior Cristobal Ramos Salazar was tabbed the men’s player of the week.

Bykova is now 10-0 on the season at No. 1 singles.

Funeral service

The funeral service for Ken Merkel, a major figure in the Spokane-area sports scene for four decades, will be held on Friday at 1 p.m. at Rose Circle, Riverside Memorial Park, 508 N. Government Way in Spokane.
