Rejected The attorney for NFL prospect Jameis Winston says the lawsuit filed Thursday against him by a woman who says he raped her is “false” and a “stunt.” David Cornwell said in a statement the lawsuit by former Florida State student Erica Kinsman was expected. He said her accusations against the former Seminole quarterback have been rejected by police and Florida State.

Returned Five-time Grand Slam champion Martina Hingis will play her first competitive singles match since 2007 in a Fed Cup playoff today. Her selection makes her eligible for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Recovered Basketball Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is recovering after undergoing quadruple coronary bypass surgery. In the statement, Abdul-Jabbar, 68, says he’s looking forward to getting back to his usual activities soon and he asks that people cherish and live life to the fullest.

• Iowa State says coach Fred Hoiberg has undergone open-heart surgery to replace aortic valve. Hoiberg retired from the NBA following the 2004-05 season because of heart issues.

• Hawks forward Thabo Sefolosha is recovering from surgery on his right leg, which he says was injured during his arrest by New York police last week. Sefolosha will miss the playoffs, with an expected recovery period of about six months.

Fired The Philadelphia Flyers have fired head coach Craig Berube. Berube went 75-58-28 (.553) with the Flyers and took them to the playoffs last season.

Signed The Dallas Stars have signed John Klingberg to a seven-year contract extension after he led NHL rookie defensemen in assists and points this season. Klingberg had 40 points (11 goals, 29 assists) in 65 games. The goals, assists and points were all single-season Stars records for a rookie defenseman.

Replaced USA Cycling replaced two-time Olympic gold medalist Kristin Armstrong on its roster for next month’s Pan Am Championships after questions surfaced about the criteria used in picking the four-member women’s team. Armstrong, who is from Boise and retired after the 2012 London Games, recently announced a comeback with an eye on defending her Olympic time trial title at the Rio Games next year.

Resigned Santa Clara’s athletic director Dan Coonan is stepping down to become the executive director of development for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Coonan was Santa Clara’s athletic director for 11 years.
