Helio Castroneves will start from the pole position at the Indy Grand Prix of Alabama after a shortened qualifying session in Birmingham.

Castroneves turned in the fast lap of 1:07.1925 to earn his second pole at Barber Motorsports Park. He won the inaugural Alabama race in 2010 and captured the pole two years later.

IndyCar officials put up the checkered flag with 1:40 left in the Fast Six with lightning in the area.

Two-time winner Will Power starts second followed by Simon Pagenaud for a Team Penske sweep of the top three spots. The rest of the top six includes Scott Dixon, Josef Newgarden and Tony Kanaan.

Two-time defending race champion Ryan Hunter-Reay didn’t make it out of the first qualifying session. The 2014 Indianapolis 500 winner will start 18th.

Sprint Cup postponed

Persistent rain forced NASCAR to postpone Saturday night’s race at Richmond International Raceway.

It rained all day at the track, and NASCAR made the decision to call the event roughly one hour before the scheduled start.

Joey Logano will start from the pole whenever NASCAR does race. It is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. today (Fox 28).

• Richard Childress Racing said crew member Josh Wittman was released from the hospital Saturday, a night after he was injured in a pit-road fire during the Xfinity Series race at Richmond International Raceway.

Wittman is the gas man for RCR driver Brendan Gaughan.

Three pit road crew members were taken to a hospital Friday. Television replays showed a huge ball of flame that appeared to engulf at least one crew member in Gaughan’s pit.

Schumacher’s son debuts in F4

The teenage son of former Formula One champion Michael Schumacher made a strong debut at Formula 4 level on Saturday in a race at Oschersleben, Germany.

After starting in 19th position for the Van Amersfoort team, Mick Schumacher finished ninth to earn the best rookie award.

The 16-year-old Schumacher said, “Of course I’m happy that I could catch up. I didn’t even think that I was best rookie. After my qualifying yesterday and starting position I’m really satisfied.”

Schumacher’s father won a record seven Formula One titles and 91 Grand Prix in a stellar career. Michael Schumacher is still recovering from serious head injuries suffered in a skiing accident on Dec. 29, 2013.
