School needs upgrades

Regarding the Nine Mile School District bonds: I’m voting yes. Visit Lakeside High School during the school day and observe teachers in poorly ventilated rooms trying to teach 30 or more students in a room that was originally designed as a counseling office.

Visit the gymnasium where the pipes in the ceilings are failing and the locker rooms are lined with buckets to catch water. Walk a hallway, and you will notice all of the nooks in the uniquely angled design where students can tuck out of the vision of teachers.

Safety is surely a hot topic in schools all across the country, and you would be challenged to find a school with such easy access. This is a building where you have to walk 30 or more yards just to find the office.

The building was not built to meet the needs of a high school learning environment. The teachers and administrators have done the best they could possibly do with the dollars and facility they have had to work with. Should it have been done differently from the start? Yes, but let’s not punish future students and this administration for decisions made in the past.
