Winston named Tampa’s starting QB

Associated Press

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are turning over their offense to Jameis Winston.

Coach Lovie Smith officially named the first overall pick in the NFL draft his starting quarterback on Friday, saying the 2013 Heisman Trophy is ready.

Smith didn’t even wait for the first day of practice at training camp, which is today.

“We feel like we’ve let Jameis go through a process of the offseason, getting limited reps, working with both groups,” Smith said Friday. “We put him in that position, but eventually you have to put them in the lead position and let them go.”

Breeland injured after suspension

Washington Redskins cornerback Bashaud Breeland was suspended by the NFL nearly a year after being cited for marijuana possession, then was carted off the field because he got injured in practice.

It was not immediately known how badly hurt Breeland might have been. His leg gave out from under him when a receiver he was covering made a cut.

NFL spokesman Randall Liu said Breeland will serve his suspension in the first week of the regular season, whether he is healthy or injured.

Smith predicts he’ll be cleared

Defensive end Antonio Smith says he’s confident he’ll be cleared of any wrongdoing in a criminal sexual complaint against him in Texas.

Smith missed OTAs and minicamp after news of the complaint surfaced in May, a month after signing a one-year, $2 million deal in Denver.
