Service dogs misunderstood

Regarding the July 18 letter “Service animal law abused”:

I found it to be offensive and hope that writer Annie Pierce will obtain more education and see an allergist in the near future. Her statement does not reflect actual facts. It is not the majority.

Service dogs are not just for people who are almost or totally blind. They are trained to detect seizures or the onset of seizures. Is an employee, as suggested, going to know or have the capability to detect an oncoming seizure or diabetic attack? What about all of our veterans who have been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress syndrome that have service dogs to assist them with their disabilities?

Ignorance can be solved through education, and I hope Pierce seeks it out. I would encourage her to read “Until Tuesday” by former Capt. Luis Montalvan, as it provides much education into service dogs, their training and all the varying ways they are utilized so people can lead normal lives.

I wish Pierce all the best in furthering her education and understanding that the world does not revolve around her in public places.
