Area roundup: Ex-Chief Liam Stewart signs with ECHL team

Former Spokane Chiefs forward Liam Stewart signed a standard player contract with the Missouri Mavericks of the East Coast Hockey League, the Mavericks announced Wednesday.

Stewart, 20, totaled 57 goals and 75 assists during his time with the Chiefs. He played in two postseason games with the ECHL’s Quad City Mallards after his Spokane career ended.

“I am very excited to start my pro career with the Mavericks,” Stewart said. “It’s a fresh start for me, so it will be lots of hard work, but fun too.”

• Chiefs 19-year-old forward Dominic Zwerger has been selected to play for Team Austria at the Super Challenge Tournament in Karlstad, Sweden, from Aug. 19-23, the Chiefs announced.

The event is a club tournament for international junior teams in the U-20 category.

Zwerger was the Chiefs’ second-round selection in the 2013 import draft. He has totaled 33 goals and 31 assists in two seasons.
