Jose Bautista homered with one out in the 10th inning after two of the top slugging teams in the major leagues engaged in a tense pitchers’ duel, lifting surging Toronto over host New York for its sixth straight win on Friday. Bautista connected off Branden Pinder. Josh Donaldson hit his 30th for Toronto in the first and Mark Teixeira connected for his 30th an inning later.

Twins 10, Indians 9

Torii Hunter’s ninth-inning homer gave Minnesota a road victory over Cleveland, ending the Twins’ five-game losing streak. Hunter connected against Bryan Shaw to complete a comeback for the Twins, who couldn’t hold an early 6-0 lead. Hunter also drove in two runs in the Twins’ six-run third.

David Ortiz homered while Hanley Ramirez and Xander Bogaerts added two-run doubles to lead Boston to a victory at Detroit. J.D. Martinez hit his 30th homer for the Tigers. Daniel Norris gave up three hits in a 39-pitch first inning, including Ramirez’s double that staked Joe Kelly to an early lead. Ortiz made it 4-0 in the third with a drive to right.

Edinson Volquez pitched seven strong innings and Lorenzo Cain doubled home the go-ahead run in the sixth to help Kansas City beat visiting Chicago. Volquez lowered his ERA to 3.11. Left-hander John Danks saw his career record against the Royals fall to 9-2. Cain, who tripled in the first inning but was stranded, doubled into the left-field corner to score Ben Zobrist for the initial run in the sixth. Eric Hosmer drove home Cain with a single.

Rookie Kyle Schwarber continued his surge with two hits and two RBIs to back Jon Lester, and Chicago bested visiting San Francisco for its eighth win in nine games. Schwarber, who homered the previous two games, also scored two runs. Schwarber doubled and scored in the first, then drove in two and came around in the fifth. The Cubs scored five in that inning to break open a 1-1 game. Dexter Fowler homered and had three of Chicago’s 12 hits.

Drew Storen yielded an eighth-inning grand slam to Carlos Gonzalez, and Washington blew a four-run lead in a home loss to Colorado. With two outs and a runner on first, Jose Reyes and Nolan Arenado singled to load the bases for Gonzalez, who drove a 1-0 pitch into the Washington bullpen beyond the wall in right field. It was the first time in 15 appearances since June 24 that Storen gave up a run.

Pinch-hitter Pedro Alvarez lined a bases-loaded single over a five-man infield in the bottom of the 10th inning to give Pittsburgh a victory over Los Angeles. The Pirates loaded the bases with no outs against Jim Johnson as Jung Ho Kang walked, Francisco Cervelli singled and Sean Rodriguez had a bunt single before Alvarez singled into right field for the game-winning hit.

Randal Grichuk hit a three-run homer to cap a six-run fifth inning, and Lance Lynn pitched St. Louis past host Milwaukee. Lynn stranded nine runners in six innings as the Central leaders became the first major league team to reach 70 wins this season. It was the second consecutive shutout and 12th this season for the Cardinals,who beat Cincinnati 3-0 on Thursday behind All-Star Michael Wacha. Brewers rookie Tyler Cravy unraveled in the fifth. The Cardinals had three doubles, a walk and a single in the inning before Grichuk hit his 14th homer.

Chase Anderson pitched seven innings of four-hit ball in his return from the disabled list, and Welington Castillo homered again for Arizona in its shutout of Cincinnati in Phoenix. David Peralta drove in Ender Inciarte with a one-out single in the first. Castillo’s seventh-inning shot, an opposite-field drive off reliever Manny Parra, gave the catcher seven home runs in his last 10 games. Castillo has hit 12 of his 14 homers this season since being acquired from Seattle on June 3.

Cameron Rupp hit Philadelphia’s fourth home run of the game, a leadoff shot in the 12th inning that lifted the Phillies to a road victory against skidding San Diego. Rupp drove a fastball from Kevin Quackenbush an estimated 416 feet to straightaway center field. It was his third of the season. Domonic Brown, Ryan Howard and Cody Asche hit long home runs off Padres starter James Shields.

Juan Uribe and Daniel Murphy homered late for the East leaders. Lucas Duda reached first base to start the ninth on a throwing error by reliever Brad Boxberger. Duda went to second on a wild pitch and came home on Conforto’s liner to left-center. The rookie scored to make it 4-3 when Flores blooped a two-out single to right. Evan Longoria, James Loney and Grady Sizemore homered for the Rays.
