3 officers named in fatal Sandpoint shooting

Authorities have named the three North Idaho police officers involved in last week’s confrontation with an armed Sandpoint man that ended with a sheriff’s deputy shooting and killing the man. Casey George Alarcon, 34, died Aug. 11 after he allegedly fired two shots at the officers. They were identified today as Sandpoint Police Officer Jeremy Inman, and Bonner County Sheriff’s Deputies Aaron Walker and Tyler Jinright. All three are on paid administrative leave during the investigation, which is being conducted by the Region One Critical Incident Response Team with the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office as the lead agency. Detectives have not yet said which deputy fired the single shot that killed Alarcon. Two of the three officers received minor injuries collateral to the gunfire. None were struck by bullets, however. Inman has worked with the Sandpoint police for three years and eight months. Walker has worked for the sheriff’s office for five years and nine months, and Jinright has been with the sheriff’s office for one year and seven months. The officers were in the 1000 block of Ruth Avenue attempting to serve an arrest warrant when Alarcon confronted them with a weapon and fired two shots, investigators said. Records indicate that Alarcon had a warrant for his arrest for allegedly failing to comply with his release conditions on a robbery charge. In 2007 Alarcon was charged with three felonies stemming from an attempted robbery, according to court documents. After robbing a Sandpoint bar, he fled from the police and pulled a loaded 9 mm pistol when officers confronted him. Police wrestled him and removed the weapon. Alarcon was found guilty of robbery and possession of an unlawful firearm. An aggravated assault charge was dismissed.
