Photo: Chinese Lantern Festival taking form

A tall order: JianPing Zhong, of the Sichuan Tianyu Chinese lighting company, works on a set of life-size giraffes, as part of the Washington State Chinese Lantern Festival in Spokane’s Riverfront Park on Monday. About 30 displays with a total of 3,000 individual pieces are being rebuilt with new fabric and LED lights by 17 workers for the display starting Sept. 26 and running through Nov. 1 in the park. Lions, butterflies, dinosaurs, pandas and a 196-foot-long dragon are some of the forms taking shape. For more information visit www.spokanelanternfestival.com. (Dan Pelle)
