Flag dangerous drivers

Recently, road crews had to do a daylong repair job on a section of street near my home. Flaggers were posted; one directly across the road from me. I heard the worker say, “Get off the phone” several times to several motorists who, for the most part, ignored him.

He and I talked a while when no traffic was present, and he mentioned how fines are double in work zones for infractions, something I had forgotten about. We both had an idea that, to penalize those who continue to break the law and, maybe, after a while, make construction zones safer for all, why not attach small cameras to the flag poles that can be operated by the people manning the flags? Technology has made these units more affordable than ever.

I would think a snapshot of an infraction could then be sent to the appropriate law enforcement section once the card is full, or on a weekly basis, so they can mail a citation. Eventually, that might make people more aware and, hopefully, reduce the potential for accidents or other incidents in construction areas, which are numerous this time of year.

Just an idea whose time has come, I think.
