Feedback: Lessons of camp last a lifetime

YMCA Camp Reed celebrates its 100th anniversary later this year. This summer scene occurred in 1964. (File)

YMCA Camp Reed celebrates its 100th anniversary this year. Look in Sunday’s paper for a story about the milestone. To mark the occasion, we asked our Facebook friends to give a shout out to their favorite summer camps around the region. Here’s what they said:

Marcie Koch

Twinlow Camp! I made friendships that will last my lifetime and developed roots in my Christian walk.

Ron Owens

Camp Reed was fun. Sunshine Shelly was our celebrity guest.

Misty Olson

My kiddos adore Camp Spalding, awesome staff, amazing activities and always enough stories to get them through till the next summer!

Laurel Campbell

Riverview bible camp! The *Red Letters* we got from family members that would cause us to get tossed in the swimming pool, and the late night tag games!

Cynthia McFall Villines

My daughter has attended Lutherhaven every year for the past 7 years – she loves it and can’t wait to be a junior counselor next year. My youngest started going with his dad to preschool weekend and was THRILLED to finally be old enough to go for a full week this year (3rd grade). We love Lutherhaven!! Great staff, programs and the camp is beautiful.

Lindsay Hernandez

Nbc Camps! Without a doubt! Not only helps make you a better basketball player but a better person as well!

Nancy Jane

Camp Sweyolaken. Spent 2 weeks there every summer, from ‘corral’ to ‘echo’. Favorite week was the last of the season. ‘Gypsy’ week. We’d load the canoes and travel, sing, camp for the whole week. Lake Coeur d’Alene and the St Joe River. Great memories.

Laura Birchard

Camp Zanika

Katherine Beal

Spokane Parks and Rec Teen Adventure Camp, hands down!

Lisa Burk

Satori! I don’t have kids, I am the kid. I attended Satori from 7th grade through high school. Satori is a camp for academically gifted students and allows you to begin preparation for college at a young age. This was my absolute favorite thing every year, and I made lifelong friends that were self-motivated individuals. My favorite thing was learning to swing dance and other forms of dance, combined with the art and acting courses. Did I mention there is a medieval times banquet!? How epic can you get?

Crystal Windishar

I didn’t get to go to camps when I was a kid, but fondly remember spending my summer days at Mission Park by GU area with the people of Spokane Parks for their free program, which included lunches. I’m grateful they were there for kids like me.

Denna Balcom

Camp Gifford. Located at Deer Lake. It is wonderful. My children have been campers and once they were old enough they became helpers. A great place to learn about friendships, faith, and what it’s like to be important.

Amanda Vandenberg

I went to Camp Reed for Camp Goodtimes around 1989 or ’90 as my brother’s guest. It is the best camp around as it is geared to help cancer kids and their guests forget about the realities of their illness and what they have to face in the real world. It made us feel like normal kids with a normal childhood for that week.

Jeanne Stone Helstrom

Camp Eyabsut in North Bend WA. I didn’t attend, but my 5-year old great granddaughter did, for a week. It’s only for burn victims. A wonderful camp, catering only to children who have been through literal fires. I was so impressed with all they taught the campers, the counseling, the fun … and it was all paid for. She can go year after year. What is better than that?

Edwin Johnson

Camp Cowles … Diamond Lake, WA

Bobbi Stueckle

Camp N Sid Sen. Met my future husband there in 1977!

Ann-Luise Marshall

My son loves YMCA day camp (central location) and Camp Fire Camp Dart-Lo

Laurel Henderson

Camp Four Echoes.

Siri Hammond

A BIG SHOUT OUT to Camp Cross for cultivating a space of unconditional love and acceptance and spiritual and emotional growth, not to mention amazing times on the waterfront, playing the best games and having the craziest, most fun daily themes. I started out as a shy little girl and ended up a leader. I made the best friends of my life there, as a camper, a counselor and a staff member. I would not be who I am today without Camp Cross.

Holly Hoffman Engh

St. Aloysius Gonzaga Catholic School – Spokane has an all-day affordable, educational and fun program offered up by experienced and friendly staff. My 6 yr old experienced field trips, carnivals, a petting zoo, bring your bike day, fun science classes and running through the sprinklers at Gonzaga University.

Gabriella Moon

Idaho Youth Summit with Idaho Drug Free Youth at Lutherhaven. It is great because it is about not doing drugs. They have fun activities and teamwork building games.

Jan Shannon

N Sid Sen’s Jr Hi and Sr Hi Aqua Camps! Youth learn about compassion, peace building, communication exercises, and water sports all at the most beautiful camp in the PNW! Mark Boyd, director, ensures the safety and faith formation of each camper, and his staff provides homemade, nutritious meals three times every day, and the facilities are well-maintained and spotless!

Kim Parsells

Writers at Harriman – If you have a creative child this is the perfect camp!

Tana V. Elk Kendall-Academy

Open Bible Camp has a paint ball course with a plane, bus, vehicles, and a tank in it! Teenage boy’s dream!

Laurie Holdgate Cook

Camp Stix, place where kiddos with diabetes can feel like just regular kids enjoying themselves.

Roni Gross

Lazy F in Ellensburg WA. Great people, good food, and ridiculous summer fun!

Sandi Wendling

Bar 41 near Cle Elum! We had horses, great cabins to stay in, fishing, singing and ghost stories around the campfire, and our own little grocery store. It was an awesome experience for a 12 year old. Fond memories from 52 years ago …
