Obituary: Boyk, Donald

Age 76

BOYK, Donald (Age 76) Passed away August 10, 2015 in Spokane, Washington after a brief illness.

Don was born on November 19, 1938 to E. Emerson and Ethel (Kik) Boyk.

Don grew up in Davenport and attended school, played football and baseball, and graduated from Davenport High School in 1957.

Don went on to college and got his Bachelor’s degree, his teaching degree, and his Master degree all from Whitworth College.

Don also has 74 credits beyond his Masters from Central Washington University, Lewis & Clark College, Portland State University, Seattle Pacific University, University of Hawaii, Washington State University and University of Idaho.

His first teaching job was at Washougal, Washington, then spent 19 years Stevenson-Carson School Principal (high school and middle school) from 1973-1992 and was their Vocational Administrator and Community Education Director from 1978-1992.

While in Stevenson he served on the city council from 1981-1985.

While in Stevenson Don met and married Susan (Sudee) Paden on June 12, 1976 in Carson, Washington.

He also taught at West Valley in Spokane, for a short time before spending 13 years teaching at the Hanford School District.

He also taught at Chief Joseph Jr High school, where he headed the English Dept.

and adult education.

Don was the Post Falls Middle School principal from 1994-2005 and was a Student teacher Supervisor at Whitworth College from 2006-2008.

Don was Life member National Education Association, 29 year member of the National Association of Secondary School Principals, 25 plus year member of PHI DELTA KAPPA, Member of the AASA (National Assoc.

of School Executives), founding member of the Davenport Road Knights Car Club in 1954, Member of the Zion Lutheran Church and also served on the Davenport School Board.

He was also a member of the NRA and a proud Republican.

Don loved everything about public schools and education.

During and after his career years he spent countless hours being involved, helping announce, coordinating and volunteering for school sporting events and extra-curricular activities.

Don loved his family, his farm, his friends, and his bloodhound, “Rocklyn”.

He was an accomplished gardener and skilled wood craftsman.

He had a passion for old cars.

He loved traveling the United States and the world.

Don is survived by his wife Susan (Sudee); four children: Jason Boyk, Zach Boyk, Candy (and Mike) Irwin and Stacey (and Robert) Garcia; along with 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; Don has two sisters Evelyn McNeal and Paulette (and Peter) Meldahl; along with several nieces and nephews.

Don is preceded in death by his son Jerrod Boyk in 1985; his parents Emerson Boyk and Ethel, and Tiny Peak.

A family graveside service was held at the Rocklyn Cemetery, Davenport, Washington.

A Celebration of Life Memorial service honoring Don’s life will be held Saturday, September 5, 2015 at 2:00pm at Strate Funeral Home, Davenport, WA.
