Obituary: Toombs, Paul E.

Age 93

TOOMBS, Paul E. (Age 93) Paul E. Toombs peacefully passed away on August 20, 2015 at the age of 93.

He was born October 10, 1921 to Edgar Frank Toombs and Clara Bell White/Toombs in Eastend, Saskatchewan Canada.

They moved to Newman Lake, WA where he attended school at Otis Orchards until 8th grade.

He was a lumberjack until enlisting in the US Army Corps and served as a Corporal in the 98th Mortar CML BN earning medals and a Purple Heart.

After returning from the war, he married Estella May Hutchinson July 1, 1950.

They had four children, Wayne E. Toombs, Mark E. Toombs, Jerry Lee Toombs and Nancy M. Kapfer/Toombs.

He worked at Fishery Supply Depot in Spokane repairing boat motors for some time.

He then went to work for the Civil Defense Depot for many years.

He also worked at Spokane Eagles Lodge as facility maintenance supervisor where he retired.

As his sons Wayne, Mark and Jerry went through Cub Scouts he became Cub Scout Master and then moved with them to become Boy Scout Master.

He was a very active member of the Eagles Lodge Aerie 2 where many knew him as “Too Tall Paul”.

He moved through the chairs to become President in 1975, he was also a member of Moose Lodge and VFW in Spokane.

Paul was very active in the community serving many charities throughout his life.

He loved to play the banjo.

He started playing with his brothers at dances and get-togethers, then went on to play with Swede Swanson, The Norm Seeberger Band, The Mountain Musicians and sometimes sat in with the band at the Eagles Lodge on Fridays.

He had 13 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his wife Estella Toombs, brothers Cecil Toombs, Homer Toombs, Frank Toombs, Claud Toombs, Don Toombs, Dale Toombs and sisters Lola Lutz and Eva Anderson, granddaughter Katie Thomas, grandson Kelly Toombs.

He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

There will be a viewing at Heritage Funeral Home on Wednesday, August 26, 2015 from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM.

Graveside services will be held at Fairmount Memorial Park, 5200 W. Wellesley at 1:00 PM.

There will be a pot luck luncheon following.
