Why trophy hunting?

Thanks to Candy Frankel for her Aug. 18 letter to the editor (“Ban trophy hunting”). I have to say I’ve never understood the motivation behind trophy hunting. The Minnesota dentist allegedly baited that lion out of a protected area to kill him. What a man.

Is there some great testosterone rush at work? It really is not a fair fight, and does not bestow any honor on the hunter. There are precious few people, at least in the United States, who are hunting to feed their families. So what is the point? Bragging rights? Mine is bigger than yours? What?
