Women’s basketball: North Idaho defeats CC Spokane

Shelby Cloninger scored 17 points and Stormee Van Belle added 13 Tuesday as North Idaho used a 19-7 second quarter to defeat Community Colleges of Spokane 63-55 in nonconference women’s basketball at Spokane Falls CC.

Ebony Norman had eight rebounds to guide the Cardinals’ 47-30 advantage. Alyssa Case added four assists for NIC (5-1).

Brianna King led the Sasquatch (3-2) with 17 points and four assists. Gese Gruber added 16 points and eight rebounds.

Idaho sophomore post Geraldine McCorkell was named Big Sky Conference Player of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday.

The 6-foot McCorkell averaged 20 points and eight rebounds in three games while helping the Vandals to a 2-1 record during last week’s Cancun (Mexico) Challenge.

McCorkell finished with 18 points, four rebounds, three steals and two assists in a tournament-opening loss to No. 12 Duke.

She had 18 points, eight rebounds and two blocks during a 75-55 victory over Texas State.

McCorkell completed the tournament with career highs of 24 points and 12 rebounds in a 97-65 win over Iowa State, a perennial NCAA tournament team.
