Spokane Chiefs forward Dominic Zwerger tabbed for world juniors

Spokane Chiefs forward Dominic Zwerger has been selected to play for his home country of Austria in the upcoming IIHF World Junior Championship Tournament.

Zwerger, of Dornbirn, Austria, was selected to play for his native team in Group A, which includes Germany, Italy, Kazakhstan, Latvia and Norway. The tournament will be played Dec. 13-19 in Vienna.

“We are very excited that Dom has been named to play for Austria in a World Junior Championship Tournament which is being held in his own country,” Chiefs general manager Tim Speltz said in a news release.

Zwerger, who has scored 11 goals and 11 assists this season, will miss a game against Everett and two against Portland.

“Although Dom will miss some Chief games, we feel this is an important step for his development as a player and as a leader,” Speltz said.

Zwerger is one of two Western Hockey League and three Canadian Hockey League players on Austria’s initial entry list.

The Chiefs play Friday at 7:05 p.m. against the Seattle Thunderbirds at the Arena.
