Off-duty Lewiston officer shoots dog attacking sheep

An off-duty Lewiston police officer shot and wounded a dog attacking a small herd of sheep Saturday.

The German Shepherd apparently lived next to a sheep pasture in the 800 block of Warner Avenue in Lewiston and escaped his yard Saturday, according to a Lewiston Police Department press release. Another nearby resident, an off-duty police officer, saw the dog chasing and attacking the sheep, the press release said.

The officer attempted to warn the dog off by shouting at it but shot and wounded the dog with a .22 caliber rifle after it charged him, the press release said. The dog was about six feet away when the officer fired. The name of the officer has not been released.

The dog was treated by a local veterinarian. At least one sheep was injured by the dog.
