Prep roundup: University builds big lead, holds off Mt. Spokane in GSL wrestling

Neftali Lopez (170 pounds) and Levi Meinzinger (182) started the evening with pins and University built a 30-9 lead before holding off host Mt. Spokane 34-32 in Greater Spokane League wrestling on Thursday.

Clayton Fincher (285) and Tim Westbrook (113) also had pins to help the Titans (2-0) build their 21-point lead. Jacob Howerton’s 55-second pin at 120 started a wild comeback for the Wildcats (1-1).

Mt. Spokane cut the deficit to 30-29 before Braden Gamble’s 9-0 major decision at 152 gave U-Hi a 34-29 edge. Mt. Spokane’s Morgan Ruegsegger won 6-1 at 160, but the Titans’ Hunter Gregerson avoided a pin that would have given the Wildcats the win.

Shadle Park 49, Lewis and Clark 21: Jake Doyle (170) and TJ Trout (182) had back-to-back pins to help the host Highlanders (2-0) polish off a win over the Tigers (0-2). Shadle burst to a 27-0 lead before LC’s Chase Long (138) and Devin Doneen (145) had consecutive pins.

Rogers 45, North Central 33: Eric McKay (160), DJ Carver (170), Tre Phillips (182), Reed Johnson (195) and Timo Hareter-Lupesoliai (220) had consecutive pins as the visiting Pirates (1-1) built a 36-6 lead and held off the Indians (0-2).

Central Valley 59, Gonzaga Prep 18: Bridger Beard (138) recorded a 44-second pin and the visiting Bears (2-0) picked up six forfeit wins to defeat the Bullpups (0-2).

Mead 67, Ferris 7: Yunadi Bogatyrev (132) recorded a pin in 1:16 and Collin Grosse (220) had another pin in 1:21 as the Panthers (2-0) notched 10 pins while defeating the visiting Saxons (0-2).

East Valley 47, Post Falls 39: Maddie Bastin finished with nine points and six rebounds to lead the Knights (3-1) past the visiting Trojans (3-1). EV’s Hannah Burland added six assists. Melody Kempton scored 16 points and Glory Ellison had five rebounds for Post Falls.

Priest River 53, Cusick 40: Mel Carampert scored 20 points to lead the visiting Spartans (2-2) past the Panthers (0-2). Cusick’s Jocelin Nenema finished with 15 points and nine rebounds while Rene Wynne had four assists.

Garfield-Palouse 56, Potlatch 31: Payson Griner finished with 25 points and nine rebounds as the Vikings (2-1) defeated the Loggers at Palouse. Griner hit 8 of 11 from the line. Gar-Pal’s Keely Burnes added 16 points and three assists.

Coeur d’Alene Charter 57, Mullan 32: Mae Alexander scored 17 points, including three 3-pointers, and Kelly Ruebke scored eight of her 15 points in the first quarter as the host Panthers (1-2) defeated the Tigers. Panthers freshman Emma Bartlett added nine rebounds. Charlie Sadler led Mullan with 21 points.

Post Falls 69, East Valley 51: Max McCullough finished with 14 points and four assists and Jacob Pfennigs added 10 points and six rebounds as the visiting Trojans (3-0) defeated the Knights (1-3). EV’s Eli Holecek totaled 18 points and seven rebounds. The Knights had 24 turnovers to PF’s six.

Kellogg 57, Lewiston 54: Toby Colburn accounted for 22 points and 10 rebounds to guide the host Wildcats (2-3) past the Bengals (0-3). Kellogg’s Chase Jerome added four assists and two steals. Braeden Wilson and Colton Richardson scored 12 apiece for Lewiston.

Garfield-Palouse 59, Potlatch 32: Ian Niebergs and Matt Holbrook combined for 26 points and Mason Bates added eight rebounds as the Vikings (4-0) defeated the Loggers (0-5) at Palouse.

Priest River 65, Cusick 47: The visiting Spartans (2-2) coasted to a victory despite a combined 34 points from Joe Cutshall and Spirit White of the Panthers (0-3).

Bonners Ferry 58, Lake City JV 28: Caleb Blackmore and Caleb Harrington combined for 26 points to guide the host Badgers past the Timberwolves’ junior varsity team.

Gymnastics

McKinzie Carter won the floor exercise (9.4 points) and placed runner-up in the uneven bars and vault while leading Central Valley to the team win during a five-way Greater Spokane League meet at the Mead/Mt. Spokane Gymnastics Center. The Bears scored 162.575 points to outdistance host Mt. Spokane (151.425) and University (151.225). U-Hi’s Demri Oglesbee won the bars and Mt. Spokane’s Reigan Kampmann claimed the vault. CV’s Savannah Solsom placed third in the bars and floor.
