Discipline, sense lacking

Neil Heyen (Dec. 11) needs some kind of a sensible response as he sounds like a sensible man. My granddad was a pioneer doctor and farmer who came west in 1900. My dad followed him out to marry his daughter. I was born in 1937.

Growing up on the family farm was the best of times for me. Needless to say, most folks in those days owned a gun or two; many of them packed a pistol. Store keepers kept a gun in their stores. Even some school teachers had a gun and a paddle.

And you know what? There was very little crime. My dad wasn’t a “gun nut,” but he was a good shot. But with all the guns about, he felt safe enough. I think what makes the United States so unsafe today is the lack of discipline and common sense.
