Vets’ event merited coverage

On Dec. 12, as part of Wreaths Across America, evergreen wreaths were placed on the graves of men and women who served in our nation’s armed services. Over 1,200 wreaths were placed by volunteers at the Veteran’s Cemetery at Medical Lake. This was just one of over 1,000 cemeteries nationwide that held a ceremony on this day.

My father, Donald H. Head, was a prisoner of war in Germany during World War II, so I had the privilege of placing a wreath in the honor of those men and women who were POWs or Missing in Action. Each branch of the service was represented by a someone who had served in the military, or a family member of someone who had.

I was truly disappointed that The Spokesman-Review chose not to run a story or even a photo of this very important event. Our veterans deserve to be acknowledged and remembered every day of the year, but especially at this time. Wreaths Across America will be placing more wreaths next year. Hopefully, your paper will feel the event is newsworthy by sharing the story.
