Thunderbirds top Chiefs 2-1

KENT — The excitement from Kailer Yamamoto’s equalizer early in the third period was short lived on Tuesday night.

Seattle’s Keegan Kolesar scored 11 seconds after Yamamoto tied it at 1 and the Thunderbirds held on for a 2-1 Western Hockey League win over the Spokane Chiefs at the ShoWare Center.

Nolan Volcan opened the scoring for Seattle with a goal with just less than 5 minutes left in the second period. Yamamoto scored his 15th goal of the season 1:52 into the third on assists by Jerret Smith and Donovan Neuls.

Kolesar’s goal was his 17th of the season.

Spokane outshot the Thunderbirds in all three periods, but couldn’t solve Seattle goaltender Logan Flodell, who stopped 28 of 29 shots.

Chiefs goaltender Tyson Verhelst had 20 saves in 22 chances.

Spokane entered the game with two straight wins following a four-game losing skid. The Chiefs fell to 18-14-3-1 and are tied with Everett for second place in the WHL’s U.S. Division, three points behind Seattle (20-12-3-0).
