Late Duke rally hands No. 2 Virginia 1st loss

MEN’S BASKETBALL: Tyus Jones scored 17 points and hit a clinching 3-pointer with about 10 seconds remaining Saturday night as No. 4 Duke ended No. 2 Virginia’s 21-game home winning streak, 69-63.

Jones’ 3-pointer was the fourth in the last 4 minutes for the Blue Devils (18-3, 5-3 Atlantic Coast Conference), who finished the game on a 16-5 run.

Virginia (19-1, 7-1) started the second half with a 16-4 burst and led by 11 with just under 11 minutes to play before some ill-advised shots, turnovers and Duke’s blistering shooting turned the tables.

Malcolm Brogdon led Virginia with 17 points.

Pitt upsets No. 8 Notre Dame: James Robinson hit a runner with 12 seconds remaining to give Pittsburgh (14-8, 4-5 Atlantic Coast Conference) the lead for good in a 76-72 upset victory over No. 8 Notre Dame (20-3, 8-2), in Pittsburgh.

Robinson finished with 14 points and 10 assists for his first career double-double, including a twisting basket in traffic after Notre Dame’s Jerian Grant, who scored 14 points, gave the Irish a 72-71 lead on two free throws with 31 seconds to go.

Louisville takes out North Carolina in OT: Terry Rozier scored Louisville’s first six points in overtime and the No. 10 Cardinals (18-3, 6-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) erased an 18-point second-half deficit to beat No. 8 North Carolina (17-4, 7-2) 78-68 in Louisville, Kentucky.

Montrezl Harrell had 22 points and 15 rebounds for the Cardinals.

Marcus Paige scored 15 points for North Carolina.

Northern Iowa ends Wichita State’s conference streak: Seth Tuttle scored a career-high 29 points and No. 18 Northern Iowa ended No. 12 Wichita State’s Missouri Valley Conference regular-season winning streak at 27 games with a 70-54 win at Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Wes Washpun added 16 points for the Panthers (20-2, 9-1).

Fred VanVleet had 18 points to lead Wichita State (19-3, 9-1).

Cavs win in Love’s return to Minnesota

NBA: LeBron James scored 16 of his 36 points in the fourth quarter to win a stirring duel with rookie Andrew Wiggins, leading the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 106-90 victory over the Timberwolves in Kevin Love’s first game back in Minnesota since he was traded.

James kicked things into gear in the final nine minutes. He scored 13 straight points for the Cavs, who have won 10 straight.

Wiggins had 33 points and four steals for the Timberwolves.

Love was booed heavily and finished with 14 points and 17 rebounds.

Warriors snap two-game skid: Stephen Curry had 25 points and seven assists, and the Golden State Warriors snapped a two-game skid with a 106-87 win over the Phoenix Suns in Oakland, California.

Klay Thompson scored 22 points, and Harrison Barnes added 13 points and eight rebounds to help the Western Conference-leading Warriors shake off a slow start.

Markieff Morris had 17 points and 11 rebounds, and Eric Bledsoe scored 16 for Phoenix, which had won two in a row.

Clippers snap Spurs home win streak: Blake Griffin had 31 points and 13 rebounds, and Los Angeles rolled to a 105-85 victory that snapped San Antonio’s six-game home winning streak.

Chris Paul had 20 points and Spencer Hawes scored 11 for the Clippers

DeAndre Jordan added eight points and 19 rebounds while limiting All-Star reserve Tim Duncan to four points, which matched his season low.

Kawhi Leonard scored 24 points for the Spurs and Danny Green added 16, including five 3-pointers.

Lowry, Raptors outlast Wizards: Kyle Lowry scored 23 points and the streaking Toronto Raptors won in overtime for the second consecutive night after losing a large second-half lead, defeating the Washington Wizards 120-116.

Lou Williams added 19 points for the Raptors, who tied a season high with their sixth straight victory.

John Wall, battling migraines and a sprained right ankle, started and led all scorers with 28 points and had 12 assists.

With a win before a sellout crowd at the Verizon Center, Washington (31-17) could have pulled into a tie with Toronto (33-15) for second place in the Eastern Conference.

Top-ranked McIlroy extends lead in Dubai

GOLF: Rory McIlroy extended his lead to four shots with a 6-under 66 in the third round of the Dubai Desert Classic.

The top-ranked McIlroy made just one birdie in the back nine on the Majlis course of Emirates Golf Club after five birdies in his first eight holes.

With an overall 20-under 196, McIlroy can challenge the tournament winning record of 22 under, set by Stephen Gallacher (2013) and Thomas Bjorn (2001).

Laird takes a 3-shot lead in Phoenix Open: For all his birdies, two big pars kept Martin Laird in control at the Phoenix Open in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Laird made 10-footers for par on the 16th and 18th holes and had a 3-under 68, giving him a three-shot lead going into the final round over a new pair of the next generation – Hideki Matsuyama of Japan, and Brooks Koepka, both tied for second with Zach Johnson.

Montreal’s shutout leads to fifth straight

NHL: Max Pacioretty scored 3:08 into overtime, Carey Price made 36 saves and the host Montreal Canadiens edged the Washington Capitals 1-0 for their fifth straight win.

Price posted his second shutout in a row.

Power-play highlights Detroit victory: Tomas Tatar and Gustav Nyquist scored power-play goals and the Detroit Red Wings beat the New York Islanders 4-1 in Detroit.

The Red Wings overcame two second-period penalties and took a 2-0 lead on Brendan Smith’s one-timer with 47 seconds remaining in the period. Detroit’s Jonathan Ericcson scored in the third period.

Triple Crown nominees announced

HORSE RACING: American Pharoah, last year’s champion 2-year-old male, and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies winner Take Charge Brandi lead the list of 429 early nominees for the Triple Crown series for 3-year-olds.

The total number of horses is 15 more than last year’s total of 414 that were made eligible for the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont stakes during the early nomination phase.

The early nomination period, when horses can be nominated for $600 each, closed Jan. 17.

The Triple Crown begins with the May 2 Kentucky Derby, followed by the Preakness on May 16 and the Belmont in June.

Richards, Angels reach deal, avoid arbitration

BASEBALL: The Los Angeles Angels have reached a $3.2 million deal for the upcoming season with right-hander Garrett Richards.

The Angels avoided potentially their trickiest arbitration case by signing Richards, who went 13-4 with a 2.61 ERA in 2014.
