District 7 2B: Girls semifinalists accustomed to success

Colfax, Northwest Christian, St. George’s and Davenport all won openers at Reardan on Wednesday to advance to Saturday’s District 7 2B girls basketball tournament semifinals.

The final-four field is familiar, as defending state champion Colfax, NWC and St. George’s all played in last year’s state semifinals at the Arena.

On Saturday, Colfax (18-3) will meet St. George’s (13-8) at 1 p.m. and NWC (20-1) will play Davenport (13-8) at 2:30. In loser-out games, Reardan (14-7) will play Wilbur-Creston (8-14) at 1 p.m. and Lind-Ritzville/Sprague (14-6) will play Liberty (9-12) at 2:30.

Colfax 63, Wilbur-Creston 17: Carmen Gfeller led three Bulldogs in double figures with 12 points and Amara Huber had 13 rebounds in a win over the Wildcats. Colfax, missing starter Scout Cai because of illness, shot 26 for 52 from the floor and had 18 assists with 11 turnovers.

St. George’s 50, Reardan 46: Hailey Higashi’s three-point play after an Indians turnover with 30 seconds left sealed the Dragons’ win. Higashi finished with 13 points, six rebounds and three steals. The Dragons’ Ceci Bergquist and Alison Day scored 10 apiece and Lizzy Williams had 13 for the Indians.

NWC 62, Liberty 33: Rachel Bozlee totaled 15 points, four rebounds and two steals to lead the Crusaders past the Lancers. NWC’s Mackenzi Gray added eight rebounds and teamed with Courtney Gray for 25 points. Christine Denny led Liberty with 15 points.

Davenport 70, LRS 67 (OT): Meika Heath scored a game-high 26 points and Madison Abbott made 1 of 2 free throws to send the game into overtime as the Gorillas held off the Broncos. Davenport’s Sydney Abbott finished with 21 points, going 13 of 18 at the line.

Boys

Colfax 49, Reardan 37: Kasey Johnson scored 22 points to guide the Bulldogs (19-2) past the host Indians (10-11). Reardan’s Dan Peone and Wyatt Nieman combined for 23 points. Colfax will meet Northwest Christian at 5:30 p.m. Saturday in the semifinals. Reardan will meet Lind-Ritzville/Sprague at 5:30 in a loser-out.

NWC 70, LRS 44: David Olds led four players in double figures with 16 points as the Crusaders (16-5) advanced to the semifinals with a win over the Broncos (12-9).

St. George’s 63, Wilbur-Creston 52: Liam Sienko led four Dragons (12-9) in double figures with 16 points in a win over the Wildcats (14-7). The Dragons’ Cody Peplinski scored 11 of his 12 points in the second quarter. W-C’s Colton Magers scored a career-high 30 points. St. George’s will play Liberty at 4 p.m. Saturday in the semifinals. W-C will meet Davenport at 4 in a loser-out.

Liberty 69, Davenport 43: Match Burnham scored 29 points to guide the Lancers (19-2) past the Gorillas (9-12).
