Mariners reach tentative deal with veteran Rickie Weeks

Bob Dutton Tacoma News Tribune

SEATTLE – The Mariners moved to bolster their bench Wednesday by reaching a one-year agreement with veteran second baseman Rickie Weeks, who became a free agent after 11 seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers.

The deal is contingent on Weeks, 32, passing a routine physical examination, which is expected to take place within the next few days.

The Mariners, already armed with perennial All-Star Robinson Cano, have little need for a second baseman but appear to view Weeks as a candidate for duty in the outfield and, perhaps, first base.

Weeks agreed to a big-league deal for $2 million that also contains $2 million in potential performance bonuses.
