Preps: Medical Lake boys capture No. 2 seed to district

Tellas Johnson had 20 points, Cory Wagner added 19 and Medical Lake earned the second seed to the District 7 1A tournament – and a first-round bye – with a 64-59 overtime victory over Riverside in a Northeast A tiebreaker game Thursday night at Riverside.

Third-seeded Riverside (16-5) will host sixth-seeded Deer Park at 4 p.m. Saturday with the winner advancing to a second-round matchup against Medical Lake (16-5) on Tuesday.

Riverside looked primed to pull out the win in regulation as Jesse Anselm drained a 3-pointer with 12 seconds remaining, giving the Rams a 51-49 advantage.

The Cardinals countered quickly, when Johnson, who finished with 11 rebounds, found Jaelon Stith for the game-tying layin with 1 second remaining.

In overtime, Wagner and the Rams’ Tyler Axtell (26 points, 18 coming from long range) traded 3-pointers, with each making a pair. The Cardinals’ Donte Brown’s 3-pointer with 15 seconds remaining put Medical Lake up by four, clinching the victory.

Liberty 60, Northwest Christian 40: Match Burnham (22 points), Kyle King (19 points) and Clay Flemming (16 points) lifted the Lancers (21-2) to the championship win over the Crusaders (17-6) at Reardan.

Liberty (21-2) will face St. George’s in a first-round 2B subregional game at 5:45 p.m. Monday at West Valley. NWC (17-6) will meet Walla Walla Valley Academy at 2:30 at WV.

Ryan Ricks led NWC with 15 points.

St. George’s 71, Wilbur-Creston 66 (OT): Felix Tsai scored 18 points, including a three-point play that sent the game into an extra frame, before adding four clutch free throws in overtime, as the Dragons (14-10) earned the district’s No. 3 seed.

The Wildcats (16-8) fell to the No. 4 seed, and will face the District 9 No. 3 Waitsburg-Prescott in a subregional contest at 4:15 p.m. Monday at WV.

Lakeland 66, Timberlake 23: Tyrel Derrick scored 16 points, and the host Hawks (14-5) kept the Tigers (4-13) scoreless in the second and fourth quarters in the win at Rathdrum.

Girls basketball

Post Falls 52, Lake City 35: Melody Kempton had 26 points and 10 rebounds, Shayna Allert added 11 points and nine rebounds and the host Trojans (18-6) advanced to Saturday’s state play-in game with a win over the Timberwolves (15-9). LC’s Clarissa Smith had 16 points.

Pullman 56, Clarkston 52: Emily Drake’s 22 points and 10 rebounds allowed the Greyhounds (11-10) to defeat the Bantams (7-13) and helped them advance to Saturday’s loser-out playoff game against Cheney.

Savannah Paul added 14 points and eight rebounds. Clarkston (7-13) was led by Sequoia Swan’s 14 points.

Cheney 48, West Valley 46: Kendyl Cole scored 19 points, and the fifth-seeded Blackhawks (6-15) used clutch free-throw shooting to end the second-seeded Eagles’ season at West Valley.

Erin Higbie led the Eagles (9-12) with 24 points and eight rebounds.

Colfax 48, Northwest Christian 46 (OT): Andra Hamilton hit a 3-pointer with 5 seconds left in overtime and the Bulldogs defeated the Crusaders in the championship game at Reardan.

Huber finished with 18 to lead all scorers and pulled down 11 rebounds. She was named tournament MVP. Colfax (20-3) will play Lind-Ritzville/Sprague at 4 p.m. Monday at West Valley in a subregional.

Melissa Guske led NWC with 15 points while Treasure Farmer had 13 points. NWC (21-2) will play Dayton at 1 p.m. Monday at WV.

Lind-Ritzville/Sprague 63, Reardan 48: Tessa Jantz had 22 points and eight rebounds and the Broncos (17-6) earned the district’s No. 3 seed with a win over Indians (16-8).

Maddie Johnson led Reardan with 20 points, as the Indians earned the No. 4 seed and a first-round matchup at 5:45 Monday at WV against DeSales.

St. George’s 46, Davenport 41: Hailey Higashi tallied 19 points and the Dragons (14-10) held off the host Gorillas (13-11) earning the district’s No. 5 seed.

St. George’s will face Asotin at 2:30 Monday at West Valley.
