Keep nuclear capability

Dr. Amundson’s guest opinion article expresses the dream of all Americans. Sadly, it is based on emotion rather than reality.

The reality is this: The Russians are currently on a mission to take over Ukraine. A recent article in the Wall Street Journal quoted Lt. General Ben Hodges, head of U.S. European forces, as saying, “I believe the Russians are mobilizing right now for a war in five or six years.”

China is acting very aggressively in the Pacific Ocean. Both countries have increased military spending dramatically, and both are nuclear powers. Then there is Iran. At least Russia and China are deterred by the thought of our retaliation.

Iran will have a nuclear weapon very soon now, no matter what you’ve been reading about the “negotiations,” and they have openly stated their mission is the destruction of both Israel and the U.S.

Dr. Amundson may think that nuclear weapons don’t reflect who we are, but as long as we maintain a strong nuclear arsenal we stand a much better chance of still being here.

Nothing would please the above countries more and lead to our subjugation or destruction more quickly than if we destroyed our nuclear capability.
