In brief: N.C. State men knock off No. 9 Louisville

College basketball: Anthony “Cat” Barber scored 21 points, hitting 10 of 13 free throws, to help North Carolina State upset No. 9 Louisville 74-65 on Saturday in Louisville, Kentucky.

The Wolfpack held Louisville to 33 percent shooting and dominated near the basket, outscoring the Cardinals 32-16 in the paint, to earn their second win against a top 10 conference opponent. N.C. State beat Duke on Jan. 11 and had lost six of eight since.

Trevor Lacey had 13 points and Ralston Turner 10 for N.C. State (15-11, 6-7 Atlantic Coast Conference).

Chris Jones scored 20 and Wayne Blackshear added 19 for Louisville (20-5, 8-4 ACC).

• Villanova edges Butler: Darrun Hilliard rallied Villanova (23-2, 10-2 Big East) in the second half and hit a 3-pointer with 1.5 seconds left to give the Wildcats a 68-65 victory over the No. 18 Butler Bulldogs (18-7, 8-4) in Indianapolis.

• Kentucky ups record to 25-0: Willie Cauley-Stein scored 14 points, Aaron Harrison added 11 and the top-ranked Kentucky Wildcats (25-0, 12-0 SEC) matched the program’s best start (1953-54) by rolling to a 77-43 win over the South Carolina Gamecocks (12-12, 3-9) in Lexington, Kentucky.

• Virginia edges Wake Forest: Anthony Gill scored 19 points and Malcolm Brogdon stole the ball from Cody Miller-McIntyre to prevent a potential game-winning shot in the final seconds as the No. 2 Virginia Cavaliers (23-1, 11-1 ACC) held on for a 61-60 victory over the Wake Forest Demon Deacons (12-14, 4-9) in Charlottesville, Virginia.

• Pittsburgh drills North Carolina: Sheldon Jeter scored a career-high 22 points and the Pittsburgh Panthers (17-9, 6-6 ACC) shot 65 percent from the floor and dominated the No. 12 North Carolina Tar Heels (18-7, 8-4) in Pittsburgh, 89-76.

• Valentine sparks Michigan State: Michigan State’s Denzel Valentine celebrated Feb. 14 in style, sinking a 3-pointer with 3.2 seconds remaining to give the Spartans (17-8, 8-4 Big Ten) a 59-56 victory over the No. 23 Ohio State Buckeyes (19-7, 8-5) in East Lansing, Michigan.

• Kansas defeats Baylor: Kelly Oubre scored 18 points, including a clinching 3-pointer in the final minutes, and the eighth-ranked Kansas Jayhawks (21-4, 10-2 Big 12) posted a 74-64 victory over the No. 16 Baylor Bears (18-7, 6-6) in Lawrence, Kansas.

• UConn women rout Tulane: Moriah Jefferson scored 16 points to lead six UConn players in double figures as the second-ranked Huskies (24-1, 13-0 American Athletic Conference) followed up a win over top-ranked South Carolina by romping to an 87-39 win over the Tulane Green Wave (19-6, 10-4) in Storrs, Connecticut. It was the first meeting between the schools.

Furyk grabs lead after birdie spree at Pebble

Golf: Jim Furyk made seven birdies over his last 10 holes at Pebble Beach for a 9-under-par 63 to take a one-shot lead going into the final round of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am in Pebble Beach, California.

Furyk is at 18-under 198.

Brandt Snedeker and Matt Jones are one shot behind. Ferris grad Alex Prugh is tied for 10th at 12-under.

• Montgomerie leads by a stroke: Colin Montgomerie overcame a double bogey to shoot his second straight 6-under 66, holding onto a one-stroke lead at 12-under after two rounds of the ACE Group Classic at TwinEagles Golf Club in Naples, Florida.

Lee Janzen shot a 7-under 65 and is one back at 11-under.

Kirk Triplett, the 2014 ACE Group Classic winner, is 8 back.

Vigneault earns 500th victory with Rangers

NHL: Rick Nash scored his NHL-best 35th goal early in a four-goal third period, and the New York Rangers beat the Arizona Coyotes 5-1 in Glendale, Arizona, to give coach Alain Vigneault his 500th career win.

Cam Talbot made 34 saves, including a penalty shot, in the Rangers’ third straight win.

• Montreal holds off Toronto: Alex Galchenyuk and David Desharnais scored in the shootout to lift the Montreal Canadiens to a 2-1 win over the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs.

• Winnipeg wins shootout: Drew Stafford scored the only shootout goal to lift the Winnipeg Jets to a 5-4 win over the Detroit Red Wings in Detroit.

• Stars lose Seguin: Dallas Stars scoring leader Tyler Seguin will miss three to six weeks with a right knee injury sustained when he was checked below the waist by Florida defenseman Dmitry Kulikov on Friday.

Anderson ousts American Young

Tennis: Kevin Anderson of South Africa used his big serve to beat American Donald Young 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinals of the Memphis (Tennessee) Open.

Anderson will play top-seeded Kei Nishikori, who beat American Sam Querrey 5-7, 7-6 (7), 7-6 (7) in the other semifinal.

• Petkovic, Navarro will square off: Third-seeded Andrea Petkovic of Germany beat unseeded Barbora Zahlavova Strycova of the Czech Republic 7-6 (2), 7-6 (6) to reach the Diamond Games final in Antwerp, Belgium. She will face fifth-seeded Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain, who defeated eighth-seeded Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic, 6-2, 6-2

• Thailand Open final set: Daniela Hantuchova saved two match points to beat Marina Erakovic of New Zealand 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3) in the Thailand Open semifinals in Pattaya, Thailand.

Hantuchova faces Ajla Tomljanovic in today’s final after the Croat upset seventh-seeded Monica Puig of Puerto Rico 7-6 (4), 5-7, 7-6 (7) for her first career final.

• Berdych faces Wawrinka: Defending champion Tomas Berdych dispatched Gilles Simon of France 6-2, 6-1 to line up against Stanislas Wawrinka in the World Tennis Tournament final in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

The fourth-seeded Wawrinka beat second-seeded Milos Raonic of Canada 7-6 (3), 7-6 (7).

Jets decline option on RB Johnson

Miscellany: The New York Jets will not exercise their contract option on running back Chris Johnson, making him an unrestricted free agent.

• Rangers sign Wright: Veteran right-hander Jamey Wright has signed a minor league contract with the Texas Rangers that includes an invitation to spring training.

• Ten wins skating event: Olympic bronze medalist Denis Ten won the men’s event at the Four Continents figure skating competition in Seoul, South Korea, landing most of his big jumps in a dominating performance.

American Joshua Farris finished in second place.

• Centrowitz takes 2nd Wanamaker Mile: Matthew Centrowitz won his second Wanamaker Mile at the Millrose Games, holding off Nick Willis by .11 seconds in New York.

Forty-year-old former WSU Cougar Bernard Lagat, who has won a record eight Wanamaker titles, entered the race for the first time since 2011 and placed fourth.

• Golden fails to qualify: Vicki Golden has come up short in Arlington, Texas, in her bid to become the first female rider to qualify for a Supercross race – finishing 54th out of 56 racers.

Ryan Dungey extended his Supercross points lead with his second victory of the season in the 450SX main event at AT&T Stadium.
