Remove Fagan from board

The response to the current measles outbreak is once again highlighting the misinformation and fear that is spread by people who ignore the scientific data proving that immunizations are both safe and effective. Most of these individuals have not experienced the years when diseases such as measles, polio, smallpox, whooping cough and others caused many severe illnesses and deaths annually, primarily in infants and children.

By spouting this misinformation, they are frightening parents who are torn between protecting their children and fear of possible serious side effects.

Now we have such a person, Spokane City Councilman Mike Fagan, as a member of the Spokane Regional Health Board. As a previous member of the health board, I realize that his appointment is political.

However, any individual who has such a limited ability to understand and accept scientific data and accept his role of protecting the health of all the region’s citizens does not belong in that position. As a pediatric nurse practitioner who deals with these parental fears daily, I strongly recommend he be removed.
