Saint Mary’s men need two OTs for 69-62 victory at San Diego

Brad Waldow scored 22 points and Desmond Simmons sank a key 3-pointer to lead Saint Mary’s to a 69-62 double overtime win at San Diego on Saturday.

In the second OT, Waldow hit a quick layup and Simmons sank a big 3 to give the Gaels a five-point lead with 3:48 left, which they protected down the stretch.

Saint Mary’s blew an 11-point halftime lead but got a 3-pointer from Aaron Bright with 13 seconds left in regulation to tie it at 56 and force overtime. San Diego tied it at 58 in the first OT with a jumper from Duda Sanadze, who was fouled but missed the free throw.

BYU 84, Pacific 59: Kyle Collinsworth had 12 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists to help the Cougars win their third straight, beating the Tigers in Provo, Utah.

Tyler Haws scored 20, Skyler Halford tied a season-high with 18 points, and Chase Fischer added 16 for BYU, which has won at least 20 games in a school-record 10 straight seasons under coach Dave Rose.

Portland 66, Loyola Marymount 63: Kevin Bailey scored 14, and Bryce Pressley and Volodymyr Gerun added 13 points apiece to lead the Pilots to a win over the visiting Lions.

Portland held a 10-point lead with 2:42 left, but LMU’s Evan Payne wasn’t ready to concede anything to the Pilots.

Payne – who scored 21 of his 23 points in the final 6:27 – scored 11 of the game’s next 17 points to pull the Lions within 61-58 with 21 seconds to play.

After Portland’s Alec Wintering hit a pair of free throws, Payne drew a foul on Pressley – but made just 1 of 2 from the line.

Two free throws by Gerun pushed the Portland lead to 65-59 with 11 seconds left.
