Five medals for U.S. at ski championships

It was a wild world skiing championships for the Americans, featuring wipeouts, wounds and even some weeping. In the end, the United States produced five medals, tying its second-best showing at worlds. That was still way behind Austria, which finished with nine. The five American medalists were:

• Mikaela Shiffrin, gold, women’s slalom

• Ted Ligety, gold, men’s giant slalom

• Travis Ganong, silver, men’s downhill

• Lindsey Vonn, bronze, women’s SuperG

• Ligety, bronze, men’s combined
