Joe Namath says no QB has even been better than Tom Brady

Los Angeles Times

Tom Brady moved into an exclusive club earlier this month when he became only the third quarterback to win the Super Bowl four times.

If joining the company of Pro Football Hall of Famers Terry Bradshaw and Joe Montana didn’t provide Brady with the enough perspective on his exceptional career, New York Jets quarterback great Joe Namath is open to throwing another accolade at the Patriots star.

In an interview with Sports Illustrated, Namath praises Brady as the best quarterback to have ever played the game.

“I have a hard time calling anybody in any sport ‘the best’ because of the changes in the game, certainly, and because of the greats that were ahead of them,” Namath said. “But I will say, no one has ever played the game better than Tom Brady. You start looking at numbers, and sometimes statistics tell a story, and sometimes they don’t tell the whole story. It’s such a team game.

“But Tom has answered the bell. He has answered every challenge. He’s great. He’s great. No one has ever done it better.”

Brady, 37, captured his third Super Bowl most valuable player award after leading the Patriots to a 28-24 victory over the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLIX on Feb. 1. The two-time NFL MVP and 10-time Pro Bowl selection has passed for 53,258 yards and 392 touchdowns during his 15-year career.

How Brady stacks up against Peyton Manning and Brett Favre – two other great quarterbacks of the same era – is debatable, but it appears Namath has made up his mind as to who’s the greatest.
