In brief: Medicaid director to speak at EWU

Washington’s Medicaid director will talk to an Eastern Washington University student organization about how the Affordable Care Act has affected the health insurance program.

MaryAnn Lindeblad is the featured speaker at EWU’s ninth annual winter health care luncheon, to be held on Feb. 27 at the university’s Spokane campus in the South Campus Facility, 412 E. Spokane Falls Blvd. Her talk will focus on the newest Medicaid guidelines and their impacts to state residents.

Tickets are $20 for general admission, $15 for students and free to EWU students with a valid student I.D.

Job fair Saturday for city parks work

RIVERFRONT PARK – The annual job fair is Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Riverfront Park in the Pavilion area.

More than 200 spring and summer jobs are available in the city’s parks and aquatics centers.

Positions range from cashiers to security guards and food service, as well as parking attendants and lifeguards and swim instructors.

Fish Fridays at Knights of Columbus

SPOKANE VALLEY – The Knights of Columbus Council 4196 is hosting a fish fry every Friday from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. beginning on Friday and running through March 27, in the parish hall at St. Mary’s, 304 S. Adams Road. The menu is baked or fried fish, french fries or baked potato, clam chowder or soup, coleslaw and bread. The cost is a donation to Catholic Charities Childbirth and Parenting Assistance Program (CAPA) or 40 Cans For Lent (either 40 cans of food or a dollar for each day of lent) for homeless veterans. CAPA needs new baby bottles, diapers, wipes, lotion, swings, gates and breastfeeding supplies – and used strollers, quilts, receiving blankets and maternity and children’s clothing. Thomas memorial is Saturday at U-Hi

SPOKANE VALLEY – Longtime Spokane Valley music teacher and Central Valley High School Band director Frank R. Thomas’ memorial service will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at the University High School Auditorium, 12420 E. 37th Ave.

Thomas died at his home on Dec. 14. He was 86 years old.

SCOPE station sought at 57th, Regal

SOUTHEAST SPOKANE – Neighbors in the area of 57th Avenue and South Regal Street are working to establish a SCOPE station there.

Hero Dog nominations being taken

SPOKANE – Nominate your dog for the American Humane Society’s Hero Dog awards before Wednesday.

Dogs may be nominated in eight categories: Therapy Dogs, Service Dogs, Law Enforcement Dogs, Military Dogs, Arson Dogs, Search and Rescue Dogs, Guide/Hearing Dogs and Emerging Hero dogs.

The top dog will be flown to Los Angles for a gala event on Sept. 19 – it will be televised on the Hallmark Channel.

SPOKANE – Registration is open for the 5K Superhero fun run, benefiting CASA partners, on March 28 at 10 a.m. at Gonzaga University’s Law School. Pub plans benefit for Cooper family

PJ’s Pub, 1717 N. Monroe St., is holding a benefit event on Saturday with live music starting at 8 p.m. to raise money for the family of Duane Cooper, 35, who died unexpectedly leaving a wife and two boys. Cooper was a Spokane city employee for 13 years.

A Duane Cooper Memorial Fund has been established at Spokane Teachers Credit Union.
