UC Davis beats Gonzaga in baseball

Spencer Koopmans was masterful on the mound Friday in leading the UC Davis baseball team to a 6-2 win over Gonzaga in the opener of a four-game nonconference series in Davis, California.

Koopmans allowed just two hits and two walks in eight shutout innings. The Bulldogs got both of their runs off Justin Mullins, who pitched the ninth.

GU’s Jimmy Sinatro and Caleb Wood had two hits apiece.

The Aggies and Bulldogs will play a doubleheader today.

• Jon Littell went 3 for 4 with three RBIs and No. 9 Oklahoma State (2-3) routed Washington State 11-1 in a nonconference game in Surprise, Arizona. The Cougars (3-3) managed just two hits. WSU will play Kansas in Surprise today.

• Whitworth set season highs in hits and runs and cruised past Schreiner 18-11 in the opener of a four-game series in Kerrville, Texas. The Pirates (2-3) put up seven runs in the third and four more in the fourth. They led 18-4 before Schreiner scored seven in the bottom of the ninth. Whitworth’s Joshua Davis and Jeremy Druffel had three RBIs apiece and Dalton Carter had three hits and scored three runs. The Pirates and Mountaineers (2-5) will play a doubleheader today.

Men’s golf

Washington State shot even-par in the final round and moved up two spots to finish 10th out of 17 teams at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate at the Wailua Golf Course in Lihue, Hawaii. The Cougars finished the three-round tournament at 27-over 891. Freshman Derek Bayley (Rathdrum) led the Cougars on the final day, shooting a 3-under 69, tied for the sixth-lowest in the final round. He had three birdies on the back nine and finished tied for 27th at 6-over 222.

Next up for WSU is the Bandon Dunes Championship in Bandon, Oregon, March 13-15.
