Riverside grabs regional spot

Riverside’s Brandon Morris made four free throws – his only points of the game – in the final 50 seconds and the Rams kept their season alive with a 61-59 win over Freeman in a District 7 1A elimination game Saturday at West Valley High School.

The win gave Riverside (19-6) the second and final seed to next weekend’s regional round of the State 1A tournament.

Freeman’s Jake Phipps hit a 3-pointer in the final minute to cut the Rams’ lead to 1, but Morris closed it out at the line.

Riverside’s Kevin Huggins scored 20 points on 10-of-14 shooting, Andrew Kramer scored 19 and Tyler Axtell chipped in eight points and 10 rebounds. The Rams turned the ball over just eight times and had 16 assists.

Ryan Maine led three Freeman (13-11) players in double figures with a game-high 23.

2A subregional

Wapato 65, West Valley 52: Christian Vela scored 27 points and the Wolves claimed the final seed to the regional round of state with a win over the visiting Eagles (15-9). Martin Herford and Anthony Rice scored 17 and 13, respectively, for West Valley.

2B subregional

Liberty 70, Northwest Christian 61: Match Burnham had 22 points, nine rebounds and eight assists and the Lancers (23-2) used a 19-8 third-quarter run to get past the Crusaders (18-7) in the title game at Whitman College in Walla Walla. It gave Liberty the top seed to the regional round of state. NWC is the second seed. Kyle King added 21 points for Liberty. He made 5 of 6 3s and 6 of 7 free throws. David Olds led three Crusaders in double figures with a game-high 23 points.

Wilbur-Creston 56, Walla Walla Valley Academy 47: Colton Magers scored 18 points and the Wildcats (19-8) pulled away in the fourth to secure the third seed to the regional round of state at Whitman College. WWVA is the fourth seed.

District 7 1B

Almira/Coulee-Hartline 51, Curlew 46: Dallas Isaak scored 23 points, Payton Nielsen added 12 and 14 rebounds and the Warriors (19-4) erased a five-point first-half deficit and beat the Cougars (18-5) in the title game in Deer Park. ACH claimed the top seed to regionals. Curlew is No. 2. Coby Grumbach (13) and Aaron McCullough (12) led Curlew.

Cusick 47, Selkirk 35: Alec Bluff scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Panthers (15-9) used a 17-2 fourth-quarter charge to get past the Rangers (14-10) in an elimination game in Deer Park. Bluff scored 10 in the final quarter. The win gave Cusick the third and final seed to regionals.

2A subregional

Pullman 42, East Valley (Yakima) 38: Savannah Paul scored 15 points and pulled down eight rebounds as the Greyhounds (14-10) fended off the Red Devils’ fouth-quarter charge and claimed a spot in the regional round of state with a win in Pullman. Emily Drake added 10 poins and nine rebounds and Maddi Mueller chipped in eight points and nine boards for Pullman, which won the rebounding battle 38-23.

East Valley 44, Selah 40: Hannah Burland scored 18 points and Jordan Phelan added 10 points and 11 rebounds as the Knights (19-3) held on late to secure a berth to the regional round of state.

2B subregional

Colfax 47, Dayton 28: Kori Goodwin scored 10 points, Amara Huber added nine and Colfax (22-3) locked down defensively in a title-game win over Dayton at Whitman College. The win gave Colfax the top seed to the regional round of state. Dayton is No. 2.

Northwest Christian 61, Lind-Ritzville/Sprague 47: Courtney Gray poured in 27 points on 10-of-12 shooting and the Crusaders (23-3) clipped the Broncos (18-9) in a seeding game at Whitman College. NWC is the third seed to the regional round of state, LRS the fourth. Rachel Bozlee added 17 points for NWC. The Broncos were led by Peyton Curtis’ 12 points.

District 7 1B

Republic 53, Odessa-Harrington 39: Shania Graham had 14 points, seven rebounds, five steals and three assists as the Tigers (23-0) built a comfortable lead through three quarters and topped the Titans (11-12) in the title game in Deer Park. Republic claimed the top seed to regionals. Odessa-Harrington is No. 2.

Almira/Coulee-Hartline 41, Wellpinit 37: Reinnee Rockett had 13 points and six rebounds and the Warriors (18-5) hit enough free throws down the stretch to beat the Redskins (16-8) in Deer Park and claim the third and final seed to regionals. Wellpinit’s Andreya Colvin tallied a game-high 14 points.
