Area roundup: Gonzaga golf finishes second at Palm Valley

The Gonzaga Bulldogs men used seventh-place efforts from James Fahy and Angus Montgomery to finish second at the Neville Kovacs Group Intercollegiate at Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear, Arizona, on Tuesday.

Fahy shot a final-round 4-under-par 68 to end the three-day tournament with a 1-under 215, as did Montgomery who carded a final-round 71.

Utah Valley (868) won the tournament by six strokes over Gonzaga.

Arizona State’s Broc Johnson was the medalist with a 9-under 207.

• The Gonzaga Bulldogs women placed 10th at the UC Irvine Invitational in Santa Ana, California, one spot in front of fifth-ranked Stanford at the Santa Ana Country Club. Ciera Min led Gonzaga, tying for 21st place, with a three-round total of 4-over-par 220. Alice Kim was next in line for GU with a 30th-place finish at 223. The top-ranked Washington Huskies won the event with a 10-under 854 total. The Bulldogs carded a 900. Texas A&M’s Marijosse Navarro was the medalist. She and USC’s Gabriella Then tied for top honors at 5-under 211. Navarro won the title with a birdie on the fifth playoff hole.

Junior hockey

Paxton Malone scored two goals and added an assist and goaltender John Manlow made 43 saves as the Spokane Braves rolled to a 6-0 win over the visiting Castlegar Rebels to even their KIJHL postseason series at 2-2.
