Area roundup: Gonzaga, Purdue split doubleheader

Mitchell Gunsolus and Tyler Frost each had four hits, Justin Jacobs hit a three-run home run and Gonzaga (5-5) bounced back from a 5-3 opening-game loss to Purdue (4-5) by defeating the Boilermakers 12-2 during a Phoenix Muni Classic doubleheader.

Brandon Bailey (2-1) pitched seven solid innings in the second game, striking out a career-high nine, and allowing a career-low three hits.

Jacobs’ homer was his second of the year and increased his team-leading RBI total to nine.

Gunsolus, who had two hits in the opener, picked up his seventh multihit game of the season.

Gunsolus’ batting average is .500.

Washington State 11, UC Riverside 3: Ian Sagdal drove in five runs and Wes Hatten hit his first career home run as the Cougars (5-4) defeated the Highlanders (5-5) in a nonconference game at Pullman.

Sagdal, a senior infielder, was a home run shy of the cycle.

Cougars starter Sean Hartnett (2-1) picked up his second consecutive win. Hartnett working six innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and striking out six.

Castlegar 5, Spokane 2: The Rebels broke open a 2-all second-period tie with three goals in the final period, defeating the Braves in Castlegar, British Columbia, and taking a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series.

Emilio Trujillo and Jonny Marzec scored goals for the Braves.

Aaron Petten and Tyler Barrett each had a goal and an assist for the Rebels.

The teams meet up at 7 tonight at Eagles Ice-A-Rena.
