Seizure patient turns out to be cat

The Spokesman-Review

A Spokane Valley Fire Department crew discovered recently that a seizure patient they had been called to treat was not of the human variety.

“When the guys got there it was a cat,” said Fire Marshal Kevin Miller. The 911 caller reporting the seizure in the 500 block of South Sullivan Road the afternoon of Dec. 21 had apparently neglected to tell the dispatcher that a feline was involved.

Still, the firefighters took a look at the animal. “He was no longer seizing,” said Miller. “The owner was advised to call a veterinarian.”

Other calls from Dec. 15-21.

Dec. 17: A refrigerator with a bad motor smoked up a residence in the 700 block of South Raymond.

Dec. 18: Deputies doing an eviction in the 6000 block of East Ninth Avenue called firefighters to extinguish a fire in the fireplace.

Dec. 20: A cooking fire was reported in an apartment in the 15700 block of East Fourth Avenue. The apartment filled with smoke after food was left unattended on the stove, but the fire did not spread.

Dec. 21: A backhoe accidentally dug up a natural gas line in the 19200 block of East Dove Circle at 10:30 a.m. Firefighters evacuated six nearby mobile homes and Avista repaired the damage.

By the numbers: Firefighters responded to 248 calls, 201 of them for emergency medical services. The calls included 11 car accidents, kids who pulled the fire alarm at the Holiday Inn Express and a baby playing with car keys who accidentally locked herself in.
