Obituary: Jorgensen, Marilyn Whiteman (Pride)

Age 87

JORGENSEN, Marilyn Whiteman (Pride) Went to be with the Lord on December 26, 2014.

Born on April 5, 1927 in Vandalia, IL, she was the only child of Carl and Bonnie (Cooper) Pride.

The family moved to Baltimore, MD when Marilyn was two.

She graduated from high school there in 1944, attended University of Maryland for a year, and joined the Navy when she was 20.

She served in Washington D.C., Bethesda, Great Lakes, Norfolk, Hampton Beach, and Frankfurt.

She was one of the first five WAVES sent to Germany.

She received teletype training for ship communication.

While in Frankfurt, she married Darrell Jorgensen from Utah.

They had three sons: Darrell, Carl, and Jerry.

A Korean War Era Veteran (1950-1953), Marilyn received a Navy Occupation Service Medal (Europe).

After her honorable discharge, she worked at the Washoe County Library in Reno, NV for 10 years, and she retired after working in the Washoe Medical Center emergency room for 15 years.

Marilyn moved to Spokane and did volunteer work for Crosswalk and Christ’s Clinic.

She was active in the Mead and Green Bluff United Methodist Churches, and the Green Bluff Grange.

She loved to sing in the choir and work on mission and outreach projects.

She went on a mission trip to Brazil.

Marilyn also volunteered at Farwell Elementary School, teaching children to read.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her son Jerry.

She is survived by her sons Darrell (MeSook Kim) and Carl; grandchildren Angie and Matthew; and three great-grandchildren.

Marilyn loved her dear dogs.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to an animal rescue organization of your choice.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 10, at 1:00 p.m. at Green Bluff Community United Methodist Church, 9908 E. Green Bluff Rd., Colbert WA 99005.

Interment will follow at Peone Cemetery.
