Mourning ‘America the Beautiful’

“America the Beautiful,” where have you gone?

I pick up the paper and read: U.S. tortures detainees. Police use military equipment. Idaho considers firing squad for executions.

If I had read these articles in the 1930s and 1940s, I would have thought I was reading about Nazi Germany, not my beloved America.

As a nation, we weren’t perfect, but we always tried to be better. That’s why the world looked up to us.

This country has lost its dedication and its ideals. I’ve seen it happen in my 80-plus years. And I mourn for my “America the Beautiful.”
