Girls basketball: Colton sets state winning streak record
Colton, which has generated six consecutive state championships, added another important award to its collection on Tuesday night.
Savannah Chadwick hit five of Colton’s 12 3-pointers and scored 24 points as the Wildcats (13-0) set the Washington state girls basketball record for consecutive wins with 57 during a 65-37 nonleague decision at Grangeville, Idaho.
Zoe Moser added 17 points and Rachel Meyer had 11 rebounds for Colton, which snapped a three-way tie for the top streak with Lakeside of Seattle (1991-92), Kennewick (1999-2000) and Central Valley (2000-01).
The Wildcats are 185-8 since the 2007-08 season, when they placed second at state. They’ve won the last six State 1B titles, three times with perfect records.
Colton’s last loss came Dec. 28, 2012, a 43-34 setback to Kamiah, Idaho.
Grangeville dropped to 7-8.
Inland Empire 5A
Post Falls 50, Coeur d’Alene 42: Melody Kempton scored 17 points and the Trojans (13-4, 2-1) made 16 of 18 free throws in a come-from-behind win over the host Vikings (9-7, 0-3). The win denied Coeur d’Alene coach Dale Poffenroth his 600th career victory. Post Falls trailed by one after three quarters, but outscored Coeur d’Alene 17-8 in the fourth. The Vikings were led by Madisen Scholwinski, who had 15 points, eight blocks and seven rebounds.
Lewiston 51, Lake City 39: Emilee Schlader led a balanced scoring attack with 12 points and the Bengals (12-1, 3-0) pulled away in the second half and remained in first place with a win over the Timberwolves (13-4, 2-2) in Coeur d’Alene. Lynzee Wilson and Halle White added 10 points apiece for Lewiston, which outscored Lake City 31-22 after halftime. Lake City’s Clarissa Smith scored a team-high 14 points.
Great Northern
East Valley 61, Clarkston 53: The Knights (10-2, 4-0) leaned on their defense in the second half to erase a 12-point deficit and held their position atop the league standings with a win over the visiting Bantams (5-6, 3-2). EV’s Skylar Bastin had 17 points and four steals and Hannah Burland added 15 points, seven rebounds and five steals. The Knights, who made 20 of 29 free throws, trailed 37-25 at the half, but outscored Clarkston 36-16 in the second half. The Bantams’ Sequoia Swan tallied a team-high 16 points.
Northeast A
Freeman 63, Chewelah 49: Isabelle Miller made 3 of 5 3-pointers and all 10 of her free throws and finished with 25 points in the Scotties’ (2-9, 2-4) upset win over the visiting Cougars (5-7, 4-2). Chewelah’s Maggie Cobb scored 18 points and Krislyn Koler added 15.
Colville 37, Riverside 28: Lindsay Green scored 10 points and the Indians (6-6, 5-1) built a comfortable first-half cushion and defeated the visiting Rams (3-8, 2-4). Riverside rallied after halftime, but couldn’t overcome a 16-point halftime deficit.
Lakeside 60, Medical Lake 14: Jocelyn Cook-Cox scored 16 points, Sonja Marikis had 13 and Lindy Jacobson added nine as the Eagles (11-1, 6-0) routed the host Cardinals (3-7, 3-3). Medical Lake’s Cassidy Hagel tallied a team-high eight points.
Newport 41, Deer Park 35: Hadley Stratton had 10 points and five steals and the Grizzlies (3-9, 2-4) clipped the visiting Stags (0-12, 0-6). Deer Park cut the deficit to two points late in the fourth, but Newport made enough free throws to hang on. The Stags’ Destanne Sunchild tallied a team-high eight points.
Northeast 2B
Northwest Christian 56, Tekoa-Rosalia 37: Rachel Bozlee hit 6 of 10 3s and scored 22 points to guide the Crusaders (13-1, 8-1) past the Timberwolves (7-6, 3-6) in Rosalia. NWC’s Courtney Gray added 15 points and Treasure Farmer chipped in 11. Olivia Pakootas led Tekoa-Rosalia with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Colfax 62, Reardan 41: Amara Huber scored 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting and the Bulldogs 12-3, 9-0) jumped ahead early and coasted past the visiting Indians (10-3, 6-2). Kamille Langford and Michelle Tinsley tallied a combined 21 points for Reardan .
Kettle Falls 55, Liberty 50: Olivia Beardslee led three players in double figures with 15 points and the Bulldogs (6-7, 3-6) held on to beat the host Lancers (6-7, 2-6). Daisy Hamilton added 13 points and Erin Johnson chipped in 11, including nine in the final quarter, for Kettle Falls, which forced 21 turnovers. Liberty’s Christine Denny scored nine of her game-high 19 points in the fourth.
Lind-Ritzville/Sprague 54, Wilbur-Creston 38: Peyton Curtis scored 14 of her game-high 16 points in the decisive fourth quarter and the Broncos (10-2, 7-2) surged late and beat the visiting Wildcats (5-9, 2-7). LRS trailed by one after three quarters, but outscored Wilbur-Creston 21-4 in the final quarter. Elizabeth Brudevold led the Wildcats with 15 points.
St. George’s 59, Springdale 38: Ceci Bergquist scored 26 points and Hailey Higashi added 19 points and seven rebounds as the Dragons (8-7, 4-5) eased past the visiting Chargers (5-9, 1-9). Bergquist and Higashi combined to make 6 of 12 3s. Springdale’s Autumn Hubert tallied a team-high 15 points.
Nonleague
Republic 60, Chelan 41: Sierra McQuay had 17 points and 13 rebounds and Savannah Bowe added 11 points, 10 rebounds and six steals as the Tigers (12-0) surged after halftime and dumped the host Goats. Republic Lily Beckwith added 13 points, five rebounds and five steals.
Davenport 57, Wellpinit 33: Meika Heath scored 22 points and Sydney Abbott added 10 as the Gorillas (7-7) dumped the visiting Redskins (7-5). Wellpinit’s Kyra Antone tallied a team-high 13 points.
Almira/Coulee-Hartline 60, Cusick 17: Reinnee Rockett scored 27 points on 9-of-13 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds as the Warriors (10-2) overwhelmed the Panthers (3-7) through three quarters before letting up late in an easy win in Coulee City.
