Spokane Holocaust panel adds art contest

From Staff Reports

Spokane Community Observance of the Holocaust committee is adding an art contest alongside its annual essay contest.

The prompt for this year’s Eva Lassman Memorial Writing Contest and the art contest is “Words That Kill: Nazi Use of Propaganda to Justify Genocide.”

The contests are open to middle school and high school students.

Artists should create an original work that uses images to counter hateful propaganda that affected youth in Hitler’s time or affects the youth of today. The piece, and a 100-word statement, must be delivered by March 1. Contact Kyle Williams at kyleleewilliams@me.com to coordinate drop-off and email the statement.

The top three art pieces in the each category – middle school and high school – will be displayed at the Spokane Community Observance of the Holocaust on April 19 at Temple Beth Shalom.

Writers should submit an essay or poem on the topic by March 1 in an email to neveragain-spokane@comcast.net. The top three winners in each category will win scholarships and the first-place winners will be invited to read their essays at the Community Observance of the Holocaust.

The first-place winners for both the art and writing contests will be published in The Spokesman-Review.

For more information about the contests, search for Never Again Spokane on Facebook or email neveragain-spokane@comcast.net.
