Sounders trade up to grab UW midfielder Cristian Roldan

Tacoma News Tribune

The Sounders began the MLS SuperDraft on Thursday with just a pair of second-round picks.

But after a couple of trades, Seattle added University of Washington midfielder Cristian Roldan, Northwestern goalkeeper Tyler Miller and New Mexico midfielder/defender Oniel Fisher.

To select the 19-year-old Roldan, a first-team all-Pac-12 selection, the Sounders struck a deal with Salt Lake to acquire Real’s No. 16 pick in exchange for the No. 27 pick and future considerations.

Several mock drafts rated Roldan as the second-best player available.

The club gave up homegrown forward Sean Okoli of Federal Way as part of a deal to get Miller at No. 33.

Expansion club Orlando City used the first overall pick on Connecticut forward Cyle Larin.
