Boys basketball: West Valley hands Clarkston first loss

Martin Herford scored 17 points and West Valley used a hot start and a late rally to upset previously-unbeaten Clarkston 56-53 in a Great Northern League game Saturday at West Valley.

John Sage added 15 points and Anthony Rice chipped in 11 for the Eagles, who opened the game on a 21-9 run.

The Bantams fought back and eventually took a three-point lead with 3 minutes to play, but West Valley (9-4, 3-2) regrouped and closed it out.

Clarkston (13-1, 5-1) had three players score in double figures: Jett Sobotta (14), C.J. Johnson (13) and Trevon Allen (12).

The Bantams beat the Eagles 78-55 in a nonleague game in the teams’ first meeting on Jan. 6 in Clarkston. They meet again Jan. 30, also in Clarkston.

East Valley 51, Cheney 47: Dante Clayton scored 20 points and the Knights (5-9, 2-4) edged the host Blackhawks (4-10, 0-6). The win was the second for East Valley in its past 10 games. Tanner Jacobs added 11 points for the Knights, and Riley Jones tallied a team-high 15 points for Cheney.

Inland Empire 4A

Sandpoint 45, Moscow 37: Paul Sundquist led a balanced attack with 10 points and the Bulldogs (5-6, 1-0) used a 15-4 second-quarter run to get past the visiting Bears. Moscow’s Jake Akey tallied a game-high 16 points.

Central Idaho

St. Maries 55, Grangeville 50: Jacob Greer scored 19 of his game-high 24 points in the second half and the Lumberjacks (8-1, 2-0) stormed back to defeat the visiting Bulldogs. Down 26-16 at the half, St. Maries outscored Grangeville 39-24 in the second half, including 21-11 in the fourth period. Logan Feasline added eight points and 12 boards for the Lumberjacks, and Leyton Harris tallied a team-high 13 points for the Bulldogs.

Northeast 2B

Reardan 56, Lind-Ritzville/Sprague 49: Wyatt Thurman led three players in double figures with 17 points and the Indians (8-7, 5-5) erased an early six-point deficit and beat the visiting Broncos (9-5, 6-4). Down by five at the half, Reardan outscored Lind-Ritzville/Sprague 18-4 in the third quarter to take control. The Indians’ Dan Peone added 14 points and Brandon Reuben chipped in 10. For Lind-Ritzville/Sprague, Jacob Saetre scored 11 points and Cort Ruzicka added 10.

Davenport 73, Tekoa-Rosalia 55: Austin Zeller scored 22 points and Cameron Umble added 14 as the Gorillas (5-10, 2-8) built a comfortable first-half lead and beat the visiting Timberwolves (1-14, 1-9). Davenport’s Peyton VanPevenage added 11 points and Kendall Coppersmith hit three 3s for nine points. For Tekoa-Rosalia, Cooper Angelo scored 17 points and Dillon Jacobs added 14.

Colfax 62, Kettle Falls 18: Keith Gfeller scored 13 of his game-high 21 points in the decisive first quarter and Colfax (14-2, 9-1) dominated from the opening tip in an easy win at Kettle Falls (0-14, 0-10). Mark Webber added 11 points for Colfax, which won its 11th straight.

Wilbur-Creston 68, St. George’s 53: Dorian Jaeger tallied a game-high 22 points and the Wildcats (12-3, 7-3) used a 21-6 third-quarter run to get past the Dragons (9-7, 5-5) in Creston. Nick Densley added 11 points for Wilbur-Creston, including six in the decisive third quarter. St. George’s Cody Peplinski tossed in a team-high 12 points.

Southeast 1B

St. John-Endicott 60, Touchet 56 (OT): Robert Staples poured in 30 points on 10-of-21 shooting and the Eagles (6-8, 3-5) edged the visiting Indians. Staples made four 3-pointers and 6 of 8 free throws, including a handful of key free throws in overtime. Colter McKeown led three Touchet players in double figures with 15 points.

Colton 66, LaCrosse-Washtucna/Kahlotus 10: Brady Chadwick scored 16 points and Carter Dahmen added 14 as the Wildcats opened the game on a 16-2 run and eased past the visiting Tigercats. Austin Meyer chipped in 11 points for Colton, which made 21 of 28 free throws.

Pomeroy 71, Liberty Christian 37: Cole Mayfield led all scorers with 15 points and the Pirates (12-2, 7-1) dumped the visiting Patriots. Pomeroy’s Bryan McGreevy added 12 points and Tyson Feider chipped in 10. Liberty Christian’s Chris Kelly tallied a team-high 11 points.

Nonleague

Odessa-Harrington 55, Republic 46: Shane Whitaker scored 13 of his team-high 18 points in the second half and the Titans (7-7) outlasted the Tigers (7-6) in Odessa. Odessa-Harrington’s Carsen Weber added 15 points and six rebounds and Sam Schafer chipped in 10 points, eight steals and seven rebounds. Republic’s Taylor Campbell tallied a game-high 20 points.

Almira/Coulee-Hartline 49, Inchelium 46: Payton Neilsen led three players in double figures with 15 points and the Warriors (12-2) held on late to top the host Hornets (1-9). Inchelium had a five-point lead after three quarters, but made just 3 of 14 fourth-quarter free throws. Quentin Holford had 16 points, six rebounds and six assists for the Hornets.

Selkirk 47, Wellpinit 46: Dominic Cain’s layup with 3 seconds left gave the host Rangers (7-5) a come-from-behind victory over the Redskins (10-4) at Ione. Wellpinit outscored Selkirk 22-10 in the second quarter and led 34-19 at the half, but the Rangers responded with a 19-3 third-quarter run. Logan Miller hit three 3s in the third quarter to help propel Selkirk. Cain finished with 16 points and eight rebounds. Wellpinit’s Alfonso Salinas hit five first-half 3-pointers and finished with a team-high 18 points. Jason Holt added 10 for the Redskins.

Cusick 65, Valley Christian 39: Alec Bluff poured in 25 points and Cusick (9-5) dumped visiting Valley Christian (2-10). Tyson Shanholtzer and Cameron Bauer each added 17 for Cusick, which made 8 of 17 3s and forced 21 turnovers. Valley Christian’s John Sun had 13 points and five rebounds and Braydon Oliver added 11 points and six boards.

Northport 68, Columbia 43: Vithor Martin scored 28 points, Lino Belli added 16 and the Mustangs (7-6) dominated through three quarters before letting up late in a win over the host Lions (0-13) in Hunters. Northport built a 47-16 halftime lead.

Bonners Ferry 45, Genesis Prep 31: Caleb Blackmore scored 13 points and the Badgers grabbed control after a competitive first quarter and beat the visiting Jaguars.
